Features & Specs

  1. Decentralization

Web3 Storage leverages decentralized networks like IPFS to distribute data across multiple nodes, reducing reliance on a single server and enhancing resilience and censorship resistance.

  2. Data Persistence

Data is stored across a distributed network, meaning files are less likely to be lost compared to traditional centralized storage solutions which may suffer from single points of failure.

  3. Privacy and Security

Content is hashed and stored across multiple nodes, ensuring that data is protected and only accessible by those with the correct decryption keys, enhancing data security.

  4. Interoperability

Web3 Storage is designed to work seamlessly with other decentralized services and blockchain networks, enhancing user interaction and integration options.

  5. Cost Efficiency

Utilizing decentralized storage can potentially reduce costs by using underutilized storage capacities across global networks rather than investing in expensive centralized data centers.

Social recommendations and mentions

We have tracked the following product recommendations or mentions on various public social media platforms and blogs. They can help you see what people think about Web3 Storage and what they use it for.
  • I'm building Flash — a service to deploy websites and apps on the new decentralized stack
I'm building Flash — a service to deploy websites and apps on the new decentralized stack. It relies on public infrastructure (such as Estuary, web3.storage and others) instead of providing its own, making the bandwidth and storage very cheap and accessible. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Upload to IPFS from frontend with no backend?
Https://web3.storage/ does everything you need. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Which data is currently decentralized stored on IPFS?
Web3.Storage and other similar projects run a network of IPFS nodes that allow users to store whatever content they like, as a kind of competitor to Dropbox or Google Drive: this could be their personal content, or again, any application content, because some apps integrate directly with this service via their API. • Holders! Please tell me how you use filecoin
Typically app developers would be the ones to build on Filecoin and you would choose an app like web3.storage to store your data. As a consumer you dont have to directly hold FIL but you benefit from the Filecoin ecosystem. Source: about 2 years ago
  • Deep Dive report on Filecoin
Filecoin may not have a front-end but our team has worked on https://estuary.tech and it has been easy for our users that have an invite to onboard to the Filecoin Network, another great option is https://web3.storage. Source: about 2 years ago
  • Facebook is aggressively going after LLaMA repos with DMCA's
Clone repos to your computer, dont just fork them the fork disappears when the parent repository is taken down, clones stay on your machine upload to IPFS. You can pin on IPFS for free with filecoin. Use filecoin nodes to pin on ipfs at https://web3.storage. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
  • How can I host my file in filecoin?
As for storing data on Filecoin directly, that would require making a deal with a Filecoin Storage Provider; doing so is currently a complex task but reading the documentation should get you somewhere. You will need a small amount of the FIL token to make the deal with an SP, who will then store your data. Keep in mind that something like web3.storage or Estuary.tech may be better for your needs if you need easy... Source: about 2 years ago
  • How can I host my file in filecoin?
Easiest is to use filecoin using some provider who has IPFS <-> Filecoin gateway for example web3.storage . Upload using IPFS and they will push it to filecoin. Source: about 2 years ago
  • New realtime database for IPFS
Doing a js-ipfs backend would be straightforward and wouldn't change the app API, so it totally makes sense to do that. I tend to see it as a both/and situtation, and the current core makes no assumptions about network either way. Adding web3.storage was just a ~200 loc React hook, so I bet the js-ipfs bridge would also be that easy. Source: about 2 years ago
  • New realtime database for IPFS
In my TodoMVC example I built up the local database which a bunch of data, enabled web3.storage replication, and then deleted my local IndexedDB. It was fun to watch the blocks fetch over the network but it's not optimzed yet (it doesn't know the second block's address til it reads it from the first's) but I can remove that bottleneck. • Ask HN: Web3 Shutterstock Alternative
    > There is still no a good decentralized cheap storage. I'd love to hear the issues you have with something like https://web3.storage/ and how it can be improved. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
  • Let’s Build an Encrypted Image Uploader with IPFS, Lit Protocol, and Web3Auth
The last service we use is the one we know from the previous article, Web3Storage. It allows us to upload our encrypted files to the Filecoin network to access them via IPFS. The cool thing about this service: the accounts are user-owned and not app owned. While Web3Storage allows app-owned accounts, meaning the files will be managed by the app's creator, it also allows user-owned accounts that require the users... - Source: dev.to / over 2 years ago
  • needed for a projet -web3.storage api
Can some one help me create api which gets posted data on web3.storage. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Decentralized storaging
I'm here to talk about an incredible new project that's been in the works for the past 3 months: a decentralized platform for secure, hack-proof data-gathering protection. Astronnaut has created a platform with user-controlled gateways for decentralized storage that utilizes web3.storage IPFS and IPNS as the provider with a decentralized authentication system and keypair value file encrypted with a password. • Web3 storage service that allows eth payments
The platform should provide storage like filecoin, arkweave, web3.storage,... do, but instead of renting the space with payments in their own currency you could directly do it on ethereum. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Tim Berners-Lee: ‘Web3 is not the web at all’
Of course there's no requirement to put all the data on the blockchain. Why would there be? I even consider torrent networks to be "web3" and they're not blockchains. It is not prohibitively expensive to store data on a blockchain, however. Arweave and Filecoin are the largest storage-centric blockchains. They each have multiple exabytes of data stored on them. Currently, you can store on Filecoin for free:... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
  • Building a Censorship Resistant Image Uploader
Meddling around with pinning services or running your own IPFS node usually isn't what the average frontend dev knows how to deal with. Luckily, the good people from Protocol Labs understood that issue and built web3.storage, a service that works as a layer between your Web2 skills and the shiny new decentralized world. - Source: dev.to / over 2 years ago
  • Sharing IPFS Files via Email or Metamask :)
For example offer storing/retrieving data from filecoin network. Its not about doing additional backup of user data you store to filecoin like web3.storage is doing. Its about moving data to filecoin and then you do not keep them at your servers anymore. Source: over 2 years ago
  • "Indefinite" seems to get shorter all the time
Web3.storage pricing is not competitive. Apple will give you 50 GB for $1. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Need A Way To Host A Website On IPFS For Free?
If you are depending on something that is free, it won't be much reliable in the long term. web3.storage might shutdown after Protocol Labs are done with it. Pinning on crust is not free, but you can pin at very low price (basically free). Now crust network isn't a centralized entity and your content will live much longer. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Need A Way To Host A Website On IPFS For Free?
Using it to pin files already on my website, but a good suggestion to those needing pinning sadly they do not provide folder uploading they may some day but I keep a node pinned the files to that in the off chance web3.storage goes under or begins charging giving me time to find a fall back plan secondary storage provider.
