As for storing data on Filecoin directly, that would require making a deal with a Filecoin Storage Provider; doing so is currently a complex task but reading the documentation should get you somewhere. You will need a small amount of the FIL token to make the deal with an SP, who will then store your data. Doing a js-ipfs backend would be straightforward and wouldn't change the app API, so it totally makes sense to do that. I tend to see it as a both/and situtation, and the current core makes no assumptions about network either way. In my TodoMVC example I built up the local database which a bunch of data, enabled web3.storage replication, and then deleted my local IndexedDB. It was fun to watch the blocks fetch over the network but it's not optimzed yet (it doesn't know the second block's address til it reads it from the first's) but I can remove that bottleneck. The last service we use is the one we know from the previous article, Web3Storage. It allows us to upload our encrypted files to the Filecoin network to access them via IPFS. Of course there's no requirement to put all the data on the blockchain. Why would there be? I even consider torrent networks to be "web3" and they're not blockchains. If you are depending on something that is free, it won't be much reliable in the long term. web3.storage might shutdown after Protocol Labs are done with it. Pinning on crust is not free, but you can pin at very low price (basically free). Now crust network isn't a centralized entity and your content will live much longer. Source: over 2 years ago
Using it to pin files already on my website, but a good suggestion to those needing pinning sadly they do not provide folder uploading they may some day but I keep a node pinned the files to that in the off chance web3.storage goes under or begins charging giving me time to find a fall back plan secondary storage provider.
