Zipping a file just makes it smaller and easier to transfer places and send to people. Then you unzip them and use the audio files inside in a DAW like Logic or Garageband or Ableton.   I've run into issues unzipping large restores with the macOS built-in zip utilities. I have successfully unzipped large (15 GB) restores with The Unarchiver application, which you can get for free from the Mac App Store. See here for info. My restores were for large, but few, files.   Okay I think I have a solution but no compatible mac to test on. I was able to get the installESD.dmg by right clicking InstallMacOSX.pkg > open with > The Unarchiver. After extracting the .pkg contents to desktop, you'll get a folder called 'InstallMacOSX' containing yet another InstallMacOSX.pkg. Right click this .pkg and select 'Show Package Contents'.
