  • Anyone remember Tastebuds.fm?
It was the closest thing to a dating app based on your music taste by being tied to your last.fm account. If you just needed a concert buddy or wanted to talk music, it filled those niches well. I'd think with the resurgence of last.fm recently, Tastebuds would see a resurgence too. It's still up but seems super dead. Source: over 3 years ago
  • Can't find people who share your niche interests? I want to help!
Those are some good points! By the way, if you are mainly interested in meeting people with similar musical tastes, there are apps with a decent amount of users that already do that: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tastebuds-music-dating/id824167513 https://tastebuds.fm/ . I don't know if they are any good, but it may be worth a shot. Source: over 3 years ago
  • Spotify Playlist Lookup: find playlists by songs they contain
    > Thinking this a little further, it provides the perfekt basis for a dating application. Music is a very personally representation of oneself and if you find someone who has the same muscial taste, you already have a common basis for communication. I don't think a shared taste in music is that important, or at all, in a relationship but this is the premise of aptly named Tastebuds[1], a dating app based around... - Source: Hacker News / almost 4 years ago

You list your musical likes, favorite bands, etc. Then list whether you're looking for friends or relationships. It shows you matches and you can start talking to other people. It's a shame it's not more popular than it is but it's a great idea. Source: about 4 years ago

Summary of the public mentions of Tastebuds

Tastebuds.fm is a niche social networking platform that primarily serves as a music-centric dating app, emphasizing connections based on shared musical interests. This concept, which distinguishes Tastebuds from mainstream dating apps, appears to resonate with a specific audience that values music as an essential component of personal identity and compatibility in relationships.

Public Opinion Overview:

  1. Unique Selling Proposition (USP): Tastebuds offers a unique approach by leveraging shared music tastes to connect users. This concept has been well-received by users who consider music a crucial aspect of personal connection. The app integrates with platforms like Last.fm and Spotify, allowing users to import listening data, thereby facilitating more accurate matchmaking based on musical preferences.

  2. Reception and User Experience: While many appreciate the idea behind Tastebuds, the app's user base appears to be relatively niche compared to mainstream dating apps such as Tinder, Hinge, or Bumble. Some users express nostalgia for Tastebuds, recalling its effectiveness in connecting like-minded music enthusiasts. However, there are observations about its current lack of popularity, with some users describing the app as "super dead," indicating a decline in active participation in recent years.

  3. Comparison with Competitors: Within the context of alternative dating apps, Tastebuds is often highlighted as having a more defined USP due to its focus on music. Despite this unique angle, it competes with a wide variety of dating apps that cater to diverse interests and demographics, such as Upward: Christian Dating for faith-based users or Tinder for general audiences seeking a variety of relationship types. Tastebuds' challenge lies in expanding its user base to maintain viability against such diverse competitors.

  4. Niche Appeal and Limitations: The platform's niche appeal is both its strength and limitation. While it attracts users who prioritize music in potential relationships, this focus can also restrict its broader appeal. Some users humorously comment on the likelihood of encountering a specific demographic, such as middle-aged Radiohead fans, suggesting possible limitations in diversity among active users.

  5. Potential for Resurgence: With the resurgence of music-centric platforms like Last.fm, there is potential for Tastebuds to regain traction, particularly if it capitalizes on trends in music streaming and discovery. The idea of finding "musical soulmates" retains appeal, and Tastebuds could harness this narrative to attract users seeking deeper connections beyond superficial interactions.

In summary, Tastebuds.fm is valued for its distinctive approach to dating through shared musical interests, though its current user activity levels may limit its effectiveness compared to more mainstream competitors. Its unique concept continues to be its most significant asset, suggesting that strategic engagement with modern music streaming trends could revitalize interest in the platform.
