If you want to mix plugins and mods, use Sponge. Sponge was specifically designed for this. https://spongepowered.org/. LuckPerms has a version for Sponge. https://luckperms.net/download. Source: over 3 years ago

2nd, your solution would be to use an hybrid server software like mohist or arclight but I do not recommend those, as they're unstable & some plugins could simply not work (this mixes the forge & bukkit API). I don't know if aternos has this option, but if you make a forge server, you can add a mod called forgesponge, which will allow your server to add plugins as if they were mods, although plugin compatibility... In the case where things are on the ground, a clear lag plugin or mod will help. You're on forge, I recommend converting to a Mohist server (I haven't tried to see if Mohist could be used for a client pack tho) if you can, even if you're not going to use plugins, but you can, such as clear lag. https://mohistmc.com/ it's actually better that https://spongepowered.org. Summary of the public mentions of Sponge

Public Opinion on Sponge

Sponge, a platform prominently positioned within the realms of Hosting, Cloud Hosting, Game Servers, and Online Services, has carved out a specific niche among Minecraft server frameworks. As an open-source project, it offers an innovative approach to managing Minecraft environments, particularly for users interested in integrating plugins and mods.

Advantages and Unique Features

Sponge has successfully differentiated itself from competitors like PaperMC, Bukkit, Spigot, and others through its flexibility in supporting both plugins and mods. This distinctive capability is underlined by several community mentions that highlight its suitability for projects requiring a blend of these elements. For instance, discussions indicate that Sponge is specifically designed for scenarios demanding seamless integration of plugins into mod-heavy setups. Moreover, the presence of a dedicated Sponge version of LuckPerms attests to its established support for plugin management within hybrid setups, which is a significant advantage for server administrators dealing with complex environments.

The platform's open-source nature also garners appreciation, enabling a collaborative environment where community engagement facilitates continuous improvement and functional enrichment. This characteristic aligns well with the community-oriented ethos of many open-source projects, fostering a participative and evolving ecosystem.

Challenges and Limitations

Despite its strengths, Sponge is not without its challenges. Notably, the platform has limitations concerning version compatibility. Community feedback suggests a lack of support for Minecraft versions beyond 1.16.5, which poses a significant drawback for users requiring up-to-date server configurations. This version constraint can be a considerable hurdle for server owners aiming to keep abreast of the latest Minecraft releases and gameplay enhancements.

Furthermore, when compared to solutions like Mohist, some users have pointed out perceived stability and functionality issues. Specifically, recommendations to consider alternative platforms focus on their ability to handle optimization tasks or plugin compatibility more effectively in certain scenarios. These aspects highlight areas where Sponge may need to enhance its performance or expand its feature set to remain competitive.

Community Partnerships and Industry Recognition

Sponge's strategic partnerships further bolster its credibility within the industry. Collaborations with established hosting providers and Minecraft community tools enhance its integration and accessibility within the community. Recognized accreditations, such as from the Better Business Bureau, add a layer of trust and professionalism to its offerings, signaling a reputable standing in the online services domain.

In summary, while Sponge holds a noteworthy position as a hybrid server solution for Minecraft, appealing strongly to those requiring a blend of plugins and mods, it faces specific challenges related to compatibility and direct competition from other server frameworks. Nevertheless, its open-source community engagement and strategic partnerships contribute positively to its reputation, making it a viable choice for users with specific needs that align with its offerings.
