Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing SoShiny.
  1. What makes SoShiny unique?

SoShiny keeps a real set of double-entry books for the association, not a payment log. Most software in this category records who paid and tells the board to keep QuickBooks alongside it. SoShiny has a chart of accounts, a general ledger where every transaction posts a balanced journal entry, operating and reserve funds tracked separately on every line, bank reconciliation that only closes at a zero difference, and a guided import that brings a year of history over from QuickBooks. The other thing that is unusual: there are no tiers. All 55 apps are included on every plan, so a board never discovers that voting or accounting costs extra.

  2. Why should a person choose SoShiny over its competitors?

Price and completeness. Most platforms in this space either charge per door, which punishes you for having a larger community, or split features across tiers so the things a board actually needs sit in the expensive one. SoShiny is $25 a month plus 33 cents per unit, everything included, no contract. A 100-unit association pays about $58 a month. Beyond price, the accounting is genuinely built in rather than delegated to a second system, which for a self-managed board removes an entire piece of software and the reconciliation work between the two.

  3. How would you describe the primary audience of SoShiny?

Volunteer boards of self-managed community associations in the United States: homeowners associations, condominium associations, housing cooperatives, marinas, mobile home parks and resident-owned communities, and 55+ communities. Typically 30 to 500 units, with no management company, where a treasurer and a president are doing this in evenings around their real jobs. Many are older residents, so readability and a low learning curve matter as much as features.

  4. What's the story behind SoShiny?

Kevin Leigh bought a condo in Daytona Beach, Florida, joined the board, and found the association running on a binder, a spreadsheet somebody had built in the 1990s, and long email chains. The dues tracking was manual, repair requests went missing, and nobody could find the documents. He wrote a business plan, hired developers, and handed the board a rough first version. He is still the treasurer of that 128-unit building, and it still runs on this software, which means every feature has to survive contact with an actual board meeting before it ships.
