For learning coding you have heard it right first steps will have to be learn a programming language such as javascript, python (they are the easy one and I picked Javascript first). I personally got started with sololearn.com and w3schools.com both of which are free. There is also the lectures from Harvard's CS50 course which are on youtube, free for you to watch. Easiest way I found to just get started without having to set up a development environment, install an IDE, work with Git, etc. Was sololearn.com - you can code directly in the browser and it was a great first taste of what coding in Python was like without having to spend time setting everything up or reading too much.
