Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Skiml.
  1. What's the story behind Skiml?

Skiml started from one observation: read-later tools have gotten very good at three verbs (saving, resurfacing, and storing) but ignore the one people are actually stuck on, deciding. Pocket, Instapaper, and their successors made it frictionless to hoard articles, so we all built guilt piles we never cleared. Pocket's 2025 shutdown made the gap obvious. Skiml was built to own the missing verb: it turns each save into an action brief so you can decide in about a minute and move on. The full manifesto is at skiml.io/manifesto.

  2. Who are some of the biggest customers of Skiml?

    Independent researchers and analysts

    Software engineers and technical founders

    Students and lifelong learners

  3. What makes Skiml unique?

Skiml doesn't just summarize what you save, it tells you what to do with it. Save any page from Chrome and Skiml writes a short action brief (a plain-language summary, the key insights, and clear action items) instead of a wall of text or a highlight you'll never reread. A daily or weekly email digest resurfaces the right saves, and a keyboard-first triage mode (Act, Reference, Archive) clears the backlog in minutes. Most read-later tools help you save and resurface. Skiml is the resolution layer that helps you actually finish.

  4. Why should a person choose Skiml over its competitors?

Readwise resurfaces what you saved, Raindrop bookmarks it, and Obsidian stores it, but none of them close the loop by telling you what to do next. Skiml does. Every save becomes a one-minute action brief with a clear verdict and next steps, and the daily digest plus triage mode turn clearing your pile into a habit instead of a chore. It also goes beyond articles: PDFs, YouTube videos, podcasts, and forwarded newsletters all become the same skimmable brief. If your read-later list has become a guilt pile, Skiml is built to empty it. A strong Pocket, Instapaper, or Matter alternative.

  5. How would you describe the primary audience of Skiml?

Curious, over-subscribed knowledge workers: engineers, founders, researchers, analysts, students, and lifelong learners who save far more than they read. If you have a browser full of open tabs and a read-later app that has quietly become a graveyard, you are the target user. Skiml is for people who want to act on what they save, not just collect it.

  6. Which are the primary technologies used for building Skiml?

Next.js (App Router), React, and TypeScript, hosted on Vercel

Supabase (Postgres, Auth, Row-Level Security, Realtime) for data and accounts

Anthropic's Claude (Sonnet) API to generate the action briefs

Chrome extension on Manifest V3, with Mozilla Readability for content extraction

    Tailwind CSS for the interface

Stripe for payments and Resend for transactional email and the digest
