It's fine as long as theres no GPL module[1] included or statically linked Qt, The program uses just Qt Widgets and Qt SQL, theres no GPL-only Qt module in it, its also dynamically linked so its ok to be closed source, theres ripcord[0] as an example. I just want to avoid the wave of open source rebranding that will come with AI programming being so easily accessible as theres no respect when theres easy money... - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
> And the 'start a thread' nazis Social issues can't be solved by technical means. Just slightly incentivised in some direction (like discord's "this is the third reply, would you like a thread instead?") But for the resource usage, ripcord https://cancel.fm/ripcord/ already proved you can have a capable client which is super light and fast if you care. - Source: Hacker News / 5 months ago
In practice yes. Lots of people developing and using third party clients. Of course it's not ideal with bans and API updates pulling the rug from under you with no warning, but actually not that many people get banned and ripcord (thirdparty client) was working for a long time even after being abandoned. ripcord: https://cancel.fm/ripcord/. - Source: Hacker News / 11 months ago
Discord's first-level support was not willing to reinstate my account, and I had toยฒ track down their head of security on Twitter to get my account reinstated. ยน) https://cancel.fm/ripcord/, no further development since. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
That argument would hold more power if there wasn't an existing native client for Slack and Discord, made by one person, with all the features I needed, working with absolutely no lag and minimal resource use, working on MacOS, Linux, Windows. Unfortunately the development stopped, or I'd still use it. https://cancel.fm/ripcord/. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
Https://cancel.fm/ripcord/ Used it before, worked OK. Now I use Matrix, so I don't need it anymore. Neat trick: AppImages are squashfs compressed filesystems, so they can have slow startup etc. Fix this with ./app.AppImage --appimage-extract, find the binary in the created folder and run that one instead, so that you pay the decompression cost only once. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
Not sure if it still works (or will continue to work) but this might be what you're looking for: https://cancel.fm/ripcord/ I've also had fairly good results using gtkcord4, though it takes it little finagling to get up-and-running: https://github.com/diamondburned/gtkcord4. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
There are a bunch of features in slack beyond the core chat stuff, like: 1. Being connected to multiple communities and switching between them instantly this can be of course simply replaced by connecting to different servers in a tabbed terminal and use the terminal's built-in cmd-1/2/... shortcut, which happens to be the same as in slack. 2. Meta data about others, like their timezone or how to pronounce their... - Source: Hacker News / about 3 years ago
All three of these are web browsers (slack and vscode are built on electron) that are notoriously RAM-hungry. If you don't want to buy new hardware, switching to using the slack web-app or using a third party client like Ripcord will remove one of those browsers, and using an IDE that isn't a web browser would take out another. You may also find that another browser like Firefox uses less memory than Chrome. Source: about 3 years ago

How does this compare to Ripcord[0]? Granted there haven't been any new releases of Ripcord in a couple of years, it's super lightweight and mostly perfect for my uses. [0]: https://cancel.fm/ripcord/. - Source: Hacker News / about 3 years ago

I've tried several other alternatives and they usually fall short: - weeslack (https://github.com/wee-slack/wee-slack): type /thread a1c to open a privmsg with the threads. it's ok - irccloud (https://www.irccloud.com/): similar to the official client in threading and web-based. Using irccloud as an IRC BNC to slack causes threaded messages to be posted to the main channel - ripcord: (https://cancel.fm/ripcord/)... Source: almost 4 years ago

If you don't just want to use it locally but stream it over discord, I recommend to use a virtual soundmixer like Voicemeeter to stream ambience and music to a separate client/user in the voicechat via Ripcord, a 3rd party discord client that offers stereo sound (technically against Discord ToS, so fair warning). I just picked up an SPX and Discord has been super painful in Edge or using the native x64 Electron app and one of the few apps that felt like a bit of a deal killer for me. I grabbed Ripcord: Desktop Chat Client (cancel.fm) because I've used it on a couple of other devices and it seems to work just fine with very low CPU+RAM consumed on the SPX (less than 1% CPU and less than 100mb of RAM last time I checked).
