As for the jack patchbay, I think it demonstrates my point perfectly. It works fine, but, ah... Look at the thing. It's a Qt application with a very small team behind it. I could be mistaken, but my read on the situation is that jack developers have to divert some of their attention from jackd and other core infrastructure to maintain qjackclt, because otherwise jack would have no user interface at all.
