   Founder Iqbal Abdullah built PuchiDen after Skype was retired in May 2025 and its replacements — Teams, WhatsApp, LINE — all required both people to install the same app just to make one phone call. Iqbal spent nearly 20 years in telephony infrastructure (SMS-to-email, SIP, WebRTC), starting Xoxzo in 2007 and running it for 14 years before its 2021 acquisition, so he had already solved the hard parts (codecs, NAT traversal, carrier routing, call quality). PuchiDen was built as a "public phone for the internet" in that spirit: no app, no account, no tracking — modeled after how a 1990s payphone worked, where you just picked up and dialed without the phone needing to know who you were. The name combines "puchi" (プチ, from French petite — small, casual) and "den" (電, from denwa/telephone) — literally "a small phone."
