Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Prefems.
  1. Who are some of the biggest customers of Prefems?

Prefems is a free consumer product, so it has communities rather than customers.

  2. What makes Prefems unique?

Most tier list tools give you an image to post. Prefems gives you the reaction to it.

You publish a ranking, and other people rank the same items their own way. Their version is called a hopinion, and you can see item by item what they moved and how far.

Those rankings do not disappear after the post. Every item you rank is a subject with its own permanent page, and every ranking that subject has ever received is counted there into one shared community ranking. So the question stops being "what does this one person think" and becomes "what do people actually think", with the vote counts behind it.

  3. Why should a person choose Prefems over its competitors?

Other tier list makers are drawing tools. You arrange items, export a picture, and post it somewhere else. The conversation happens off the site, and nothing is kept.

On Prefems the ranking is the start. People answer your list with their own version, the disagreement is shown per item, and every ranking feeds a running total for the item itself. You also get a page per subject with the tier distribution, a 0 to 10 controversiality score, community written pros and cons, and a side by side comparison against any other subject.

It also has the parts a drawing tool has no reason to build: communities with their own rules and moderators, follows, comments, drafts and a feed. It works in the browser and as an app on iOS and Android, and it is free.

  4. How would you describe the primary audience of Prefems?

People who already rank things and argue about it. Gaming, music, film and TV, football, food, anything with a fandom that likes to debate.

Most of them have made a tier list before, posted the image somewhere, and watched the replies scroll away. They are the ones who care that the disagreement gets counted.

The second group is people who want the answer rather than the argument. They use the Opinion Explorer to look up what a community actually settled on for one thing, and how split that community was.

The site is 16+ and everything public is moderated.

  5. What's the story behind Prefems?

Everyone ranks things. It is one of the oldest ways people talk about what they like, and the tier list made it a format.

The problem was what happened next. You spend an hour on a list, post the image, and get back a pile of comments saying you were wrong. There is no way to see how wrong, which items people actually disagreed on, or what the group as a whole would have said. The opinion is real, and then it is gone.

Prefems was built to keep it. Someone answers your list by ranking the same items themselves, so the disagreement is measured instead of described. Every one of those answers is added to the item's own page, so over time the community builds a ranking for a game or an album that nobody had to write down. The word prefem is short for preferences, because that is all a tier list ever was.
