  • Setting Up The Home Lab: Terraform and Cloud-Init
You might notice that the Terraform template definition is pretty close in structure to the one I used in my last article. That's intentional - I set up the last one with cloud-init, but didn't do much with it. This one actually provisions the VM with cloud-init. You can also use Ansible playbooks to provision a VM, and I might talk about that in a future post, but in my next post I'm going to talk about doing... - Source: dev.to / almost 2 years ago

  • Maybe easy maybe hard maybe impossible?
I am not sure I have been reading up on qbittorent proxy in just the last few minutes and it looks like I would have to pay for a proxy server then have all requests sent to that proxy server in which would then send them to my qbittorent? Am I in the general ballpark as to how to make this work? If so I may just keep doing everything manually like I have been doing for years until I get the nerve to try all this.... • I messed something up and now I can't delete and reset server fresh no matter what i try.
Has Sync Watch State & Ratings ever been enabled for your account (Settings)? If so, then the server is pulling the info from your account at plex.tv. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Plex HTPC no longer on plex.tv

  • Yet another help with remote access - Plex and Nginx
I'm pretty confused about what the missing link is here. Usually it works fine on LAN, but sometimes is marked as indirect or insecure. The mobile app seems to work on WAN, but not usually plex.tv. Can anyone help me understand how plex networking works? Thanks! Source: over 2 years ago
  • Download media option is available on android app but not in the web app
I am perplexed here. When I am using the android client, I am able to select a movie and download it. When I use plex.tv in a browser on desktop, the download option is missing. Source: over 2 years ago
  • If I only intend to view my videos in my PleX library while on my Wifi, do I need remote access setup?
Plex clients need Internet access for login purposes. When you login on a Plex app (smart tv, mobile, etc), it authenticates via a system at plex.tv. If it cannot reach that system, the client cannot login. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Has anyone tried side loading the SONOS app on Android TV.
I am running plex.tv on a Nvida Netshield TV Pro with Sonos speakers. The Netshield TV pro has Android TV with Chromecast 4K built-in. Sonos isn't an available app from the Google Store but peeps have said you can side load non-supported apps (with caveats). I was wondering before I go down this rabbit hole if someone has been successful and provide guidance. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Container Manager / VPN
Now I'm installed Container Manager with Plex as a Container. I opened up the port to access my library from plex.tv . As I'm reading more and more in to this stuff I have a few questions to answer and I hope you can help me :-). Source: over 2 years ago
  • Yet another Remote access/VPN question
Hey guys! I'm struggling with getting my plex accessible via remote access (solely for casting to sonos which seems to require access via plex.tv). I have my plex server running on my media PC which I also use for other things like sailing the high seas, so I like my VPN on as much as possible. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Can I prevent the server owner account from showing up in the Switch User / Login page?
Logging in as this "OnlineAccount1" on plex.tv would have required 2FA, and is something I would essentially never do from an HTPC or other viewing device. I manage the Plex Media Server from the console of the actual media server machine. Nor is management of the Plex Media Server something I want exposed to other view-only users, including my own view-only user account ("OnlineAccount2"). Source: over 2 years ago
  • Plex web app not claiming server
Plex Media Server must be able to communicate with plex.tv for the claiming process to work. If it cannot, the process will fail. Source: almost 3 years ago
  • How do I fix this login issue!?
The main problem I am having is as follows. I log into plex.tv - I can log in fine. I hit 'open plex' in the top right corner, and I am met with 'Plex is not reachable'? Source: almost 3 years ago
  • WD PR4100 Plex died
I have been using my WD PR4100 for about a year and it's been great. Yesterday I found I couldn't connect to it. So I went on the web interface for the NAS and into the apps section and tried to configure plex from in there. If I click the configure button it opens a new window and says it cant connect to plex. I have tried rebooting the NAS, I have tried uninstalling Plex and reinstalling it from the WD app... Source: almost 3 years ago
  • Can no longer access Plex servers via plex.tv on local network
If I connect into my plex server via plex.tv from an external connection (IE mobile cell) it works fine. Source: almost 3 years ago
  • No Plex on local network via plex.tv
I've woken up this morning to a very odd issue. I can access plex remotely via the plex app. I can access plex on my local network via the IP address. However if I try to connect on my local network via plex.tv it tells me there is no secure connection and it can't reach it. Source: almost 3 years ago
  • Channel icons not showing up consistently
Currently, I'm at work, connecting to my server remotely โ€” but directly, using a direct connection through dyndns โ€” and the channel icons aren't visible in my EPG. (Channel icons don't show up when connecting through plex.tv, either.) This is only happening when using a browser to connect - when I use the Windows Plex HTPC app, the icons show up - although nothing will play, but that's another matter. Source: about 3 years ago

Summary of the public mentions of Plex

Plex, a well-regarded media server platform, continues to be a popular option among users seeking an alternative to traditional media streaming applications. Positioned as a versatile solution in the media player market, Plex aligns closely with competitors like Kodi, Jellyfin, and Emby. The general sentiment concerning Plex underscores a mix of strengths and challenges, reflecting its broad functionality and diverse use cases.

One of the standout features of Plex, as frequently noted, is its robust server-client model which allows users to centralize their media collections and stream them to a variety of devices. Users appreciate its polished interface, which is often cited as more user-friendly than competitors like Kodi. However, Plex diverges from some competitors in that it is not open-source, which may deter users dedicated to more open ecosystems. Additionally, while Plex offers a free tier, many desirable features are accessible only through a subscription-based premium model. This distinction positions Plex as a compelling, albeit sometimes more financially demanding, option within its category.

The platform's interoperability shows room for growth, particularly regarding app linking capabilities. Users have reported inconsistencies in linking Plex to other applications across different platforms. Notably, issues with app connectivity have been observed on devices like Fire TV and Chromecast with Google TV, although the Apple TV experience remains comparatively smoother. These inconsistencies can be a source of frustration for users seeking seamless integration across their media ecosystems.

Technical issues concerning server connectivity and remote access frequently emerge in user discussions. Some users face challenges when attempting to establish or maintain connections via plex.tv, specifically when accessing servers remotely or managing networking configurations. For users who emphasize privacy or network security, integrating Plex with VPNs presents additional complexities, impacting usability when accessing media externally. Despite these hurdles, Plex's functionality in providing local network access remains a valued feature, provided it is configured correctly.

On Linux-based deployments, Plex is often acknowledged for its flexibility but is also subject to scrutiny given its closed-source nature, contrasting with open-source alternatives like Jellyfin and Kodi. Support for multiple operating environments, from consumer-grade devices to enterprise-grade servers, highlights Plex's adaptability but also underscores a reliance on proprietary components to unlock full potential, such as advanced user analytics and catalog management capabilities offered through the paid Plex Pass.

Overall, Plex is recognized for its high-quality media management features and the overall user experience it offers. However, users navigating between free and premium tiers, alongside managing technical configurations and network accessibility issues, illustrate both the platform's appeal and its limitations. As the media streaming landscape continues to evolve, Plex's ongoing challenge will be to harmonize its robust feature set with the connectivity and interoperability demands of a diverse user base.
