It’s been working for a few years now and (luckily) I never had major incidents.   I've been running (Pleroma)[https://pleroma.social/] for (microblogging)[https://micro.mkp.ca/] for a couple years, and Peertube for (video sharing)[https://vid.mkp.ca]. When I get time I'll be replacing Pleroma with something else.   For Mastodon usually it doesn't fetch older posts from before I followed you (the term is called "backfeeding" I think). But ActivityPub allows that via the /outbox feature. I think some other server software like Pleroma support backfeeding. Source: over 1 year ago

  Mastodon and Pleroma are very similar to Twitter. Both are based on the activitypub protocol, so if one group sets up a pleroma instance and another sets up a Mastodon server, they can still communicate together.
