Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing PhotoMentor.
  1. What makes PhotoMentor unique?

PhotoMentor combines honest photo critique with explainable AI culling. For a single image, it highlights composition, lighting, and technical issues directly on the photo, so you see what works and what weakens the frame. For full sessions, Bulk Culling ranks the strongest finalists against your brief and explains why each image made the cut. It is built for photographers who want editorial judgment, not just a score or an automated shortlist.

  2. Why should a person choose PhotoMentor over its competitors?

PhotoMentor is for photographers who want judgment they can act on. Instead of giving a generic score, it explains what strengthens or weakens an image, highlights key areas visually, and adapts its critique across 30+ genres. For larger shoots, Bulk Culling turns a full session into an explainable shortlist, ranking finalists against the photographerโ€™s brief rather than only checking sharpness or exposure. Credits never expire, and the product stays focused on critique, selection, and learning.

  3. How would you describe the primary audience of PhotoMentor?

PhotoMentor is built for serious enthusiasts, advanced amateurs, and working photographers who want structured feedback and faster editing decisions. The single-photo critique helps users improve composition, light, timing, and technique. Bulk Culling is for photographers handling large sessions who need to narrow hundreds of images into a strong, explainable shortlist without losing editorial control.

  4. What's the story behind PhotoMentor?

PhotoMentor started from a simple frustration: photographers often have to wait for community feedback to understand what is really working in a shot, and what is not. When feedback does arrive, it is often vague, polite, or hard to act on. I built PhotoMentor to give photographers an immediate, structured, honest critique they can learn from. Over time, it expanded from single-photo analysis into a broader editing assistant, with explainable Bulk Culling for full sessions and Mentor Twin personas that emulate the eye of real photography educators.

  5. Who are some of the biggest customers of PhotoMentor?

PhotoMentor is still a bootstrapped product, so we do not publish a customer logo list yet. The user base is mainly serious enthusiasts, advanced amateurs, and working photographers who want more structured feedback and faster selection workflows. We are also starting to explore B2B use cases for photography schools, educator-led communities, and platforms that need critique or culling through an API.

  6. Which are the primary technologies used for building PhotoMentor?

PhotoMentor is built with React and TypeScript on the frontend, FastAPI on the backend, and PostgreSQL/Supabase for data and storage. The AI critique and culling pipeline runs on Google Gemini models, with a dedicated YOLO-based geometry verification layer to reduce unsupported visual claims. Voice critique is powered by ElevenLabs, and payments are handled through Stripe.
