I've been thinking of this for some time, conceptually, but perhaps from a more fundamental angle. I think the idea of "files" is pretty dated and can be thrown out. Treat everything as data blobs (inspired by PerKeep[0]) addressed by their hashes and many of the issues described in the article just aren't even a thing. If it really makes sense, or for compatibility sake, relevant blobs can be exposed... - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago

There's also Perkeep [1], though it seems like development has slowed down on it in recent years. [1]: https://perkeep.org/. - Source: Hacker News / almost 3 years ago

So... It just occurred to me that you need to know about https://perkeep.org , I have been following it since the beginning when it was called Camlistore, and notably this talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxSzQIwXM1k ( from this page: https://perkeep.org/doc/ ). Source: over 3 years ago

I was looking into this a while ago, there are a couple of solutions (all of them not perfect unfortunately IMO). https://archivy.github.io/ https://perkeep.org/ https://github.com/go-shiori/shiori Are three of them. - Source: Hacker News / over 4 years ago

For your second point, you might want to have a look at Perkeep: https://perkeep.org/ It supports the kind of queries you are after, but itโs a bit of a passion project and development is slow. Whatโs already there works well though. - Source: Hacker News / almost 5 years ago

My understanding is that there are two issues. First, modern deduplicating backup software like borg/restic/duplicacy store data in a repository in unique chunks. This avoids the issue that incremental backup software like duplicity have where they can create long chains of incremental changes which is slow to restore and increases the likelihood of errors on restore. Second, both deduplicating and incremental... - Source: Hacker News / about 5 years ago
Any thoughts on perkeep? https://perkeep.org/ I see substantial overlap in the vision. - Source: Hacker News / about 5 years ago
Iโve seen a handful of this kind of โGoogle, but only for things Iโve seen beforeโ app. I think itโs something the world needs, but there are a lot of different approaches and I donโt think anyone has quite nailed it. Ultimately the best solutions will likely use many different cataloging strategies depending on the content, and will allow you to tag or otherwise organize important content. Funny enough if I had... - Source: Hacker News / about 5 years ago
Reminds me of Camlistore, one of the earlier content-addressable personal storage systems, by Brad Fitzpatrick. Now called Perkeep apparently https://perkeep.org/. - Source: Hacker News / about 5 years ago
I've been looking into perkeep for organizing my photos, screenshots, and scanned documents. It comes with a web UI where you can go through and tag your files, then you can query by tags or other properties to retrieve them. Source: about 5 years ago
