Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing PDFAxiom.
  1. Which are the primary technologies used for building PDFAxiom?

In the browser: pdf.js 3.11 and pdf-lib 1.17 for the eleven client-side tools, JSZip for multi-file output. The site itself is static HTML, CSS and plain JavaScript with no framework, served from Cloudflare.

On the server: a FastAPI gateway on Uvicorn routes each tool to a dedicated service, all in Docker on a Google Cloud VM behind nginx.

    • Gotenberg 8 (LibreOffice and headless Chromium) for Office, HTML and Markdown to PDF
    • Stirling PDF, which uses Ghostscript, for compression, password protection, unlocking and grayscale
    • pdf2docx with PyMuPDF for PDF to Word
    • Camelot with openpyxl for extracting tables into real Excel cells

Analytics are self-hosted Umami on PostgreSQL, so no visitor data goes to a third party.

  2. What makes PDFAxiom unique?

Eleven of the 24 tools run entirely in the browser, and each tool page says which of the two it is before you pick a file. Merging, splitting, rotating, deleting pages, adding page numbers, extracting images, watermarking, PDF to JPG, PDF to text, PDF to Markdown and JPG to PDF are done locally with pdf.js and pdf-lib. The file is never uploaded, and they keep working if you disconnect the network after the page has loaded.

The other thirteen genuinely need a conversion engine, so they run on a server we rent and administer ourselves rather than a third-party conversion API, and the files are deleted as soon as the conversion returns.

Most PDF sites upload everything and describe what happens next in a privacy policy. Here the split is a visible property of each tool.

  3. Why should a person choose PDFAxiom over its competitors?

  4. How would you describe the primary audience of PDFAxiom?

    Two groups.

People who need an occasional PDF conversion and do not want to create an account, receive marketing email or hit a daily limit: students, office workers, anyone with one file and a deadline.

And people who cannot upload a document at all โ€” contracts, medical records, internal reports, anything covered by a confidentiality rule. For them the eleven browser-side tools are the point, because there is nothing to trust: the file does not leave the machine.

The interface is in English, German, Spanish, Hindi, Italian, Romanian, Russian and Chinese, so a substantial part of the audience is outside the English-speaking web.

  5. What's the story behind PDFAxiom?

It began with the friction of the free PDF sites: an email address for a single conversion, a watermark on the output, or two files a day and then a paywall.

The design decision that shaped everything came later: quite a few PDF operations do not actually need a server. Merging, splitting, rotating, adding page numbers and watermarking are page-level edits that a browser can do on its own. Moving those eleven tools client-side became the thing the product is built around, and what stayed on the server is only what genuinely requires a conversion engine.

It is self-hosted rather than built on conversion APIs, which is why there is no per-file cost to pass on and therefore no quota to enforce.
