With patch.com that's harder, but most of the stories the author links to have sources like Reuters. A few, like this one, don't and would likely require publishing things that would be dangerous.   One bit of context that people might not realize: patch.com is a sort of microblogging site for independent journalists, not an actual news site. There's some good work there, there's some not-so-good work there. You have to look at each article/author and draw your own conclusions.   I'm sorry that happened to you, seriously. One thing that you might want to consider doing is sending a letter to the editor of the local paper for that town. It may be Patch (https://patch.com/). And copy the Board of Selectpeople/Selectmen and the Chief of the local police department on it. Many people would be horrified to find out that Animal Control can and will do this.   In some parts of the US you can get some local events on patch [1] but coverage is very limited in some states, especially in the midwest. I don't know of any sites that have full unredacted news and as far as I can tell most investigative journalists are either gone or have their own little websites that are excluded from search engines.
