Maybe getting a single board computer that's more robust from the raspberry pi would save some headaches from the beginning though? Also, maybe something even simpler like a particle.io board would be just as easy to bring up, and be more reliable than a linux machine. A few years ago I built and installed a thermocouple device using the particle.io and adafruit.io cloud services. It is placed near the exhaust of the generator and emails me when the temperature exceeds 250 degrees.
