The first hosting service I used back in 1997 is still around as an independent (pair.com) The only reason I moved off of them was I started running my own server at home for the learning experience, then when year contract for commercial grade broadband was up, switched to VPS through a friend. If you use a real registrar like pair.com or ghandi.net instead of GoDaddy you can get email forwarding as part of the domain hosting fee. You will get X number of free email boxes and a small charge for additional ones. In addition you may be able to setup a catch all address that allows you unlimited custom inbound addresses. I am very happy with pair.com for my hosting. I initially went with them back in '01 or '02 when my then current host (also my employer at the time) did an "upgrade" to the mail system that draconically started dropping legit emails as well as spam and refused to back out of it or tune it.
