Yup good advice! Instead of covering it physically you can use a trustworthy software solution OverSight https://objective-see.org/products/oversight.html. Source: 10 months ago
Something like https://objective-see.org/products/oversight.html proves you can detect applications that open a microphone session on macOS. Could set something up that listens to that, filters by process and toggles it on/off based on active microphone sessions. Source: about 1 year ago
You can use Oversight to do that, but I'm a little confused by the location of the dot. Which OS version are you running? Source: over 1 year ago
I am using OverSight ( https://objective-see.org/products/oversight.html ). Source: over 1 year ago
Ask your works IT admin to install OverSight which warns on camera and mic use. Source: over 1 year ago
I'm having OverSight handle the part about whether or not the camera is activated and I want my script to handle what to do based on the registered state (you can tell OverSight to Execute an Action, e.g. a path to a script, binary, etc.). OverSight also has a setting called "Pass Argument" (see below) which is what has led me to believe I should be able to do what I'm describing:. Source: almost 2 years ago
Try installing OverSight to know which app uses your microphone/camera. Source: almost 2 years ago
I learned that Google Meet is always using the mic the moment I saw the are you trying to speak pop-up when the app detects noise. Confirmed this when I installed OverSight (macOS only) and saw that the mic is always active whenever I use GMeet regardless if I press the mute button 😅. Source: about 2 years ago
I use objective-see’s app Oversight [1] for MacOS. OverSight monitors a mac's mic and webcam, alerting the user when the internal mic is activated, or whenever a process accesses the webcam. Have found it very useful whilst using videoconferencing apps. [1] https://objective-see.com/products/oversight.html. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago

Take a look at the code for Objective-See’s “OverSight” utility; it is a good example of how to detect AV events system-wide. It’s also a really great app… https://objective-see.com/products/oversight.html. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
Oversight free - (protects against unauthorized mic or camera access). Source: almost 3 years ago
Do not use them! Apple doesn’t recommend anything thicker than a sheet of paper. So, if you want a cover, cut a piece of Post-it note or something like that. You can also check out OverSight or Micro Snitch for a software approach to improved privacy. Source: almost 3 years ago
Check out OverSight. I don’t think it does exactly what you want, but it gets pretty close and it’s also FOSS. Source: almost 3 years ago
There’s a similar FOSS program called LuLu that’s great. They also have a lot of other security tools for Mac that are all free, including oversight, which will tell you if your camera or microphone are accessed. Source: almost 3 years ago
Give this open source app a try from Objective-See. Source: about 3 years ago
