Https://organicmaps.app/ is the only mobile app I have a subscription (monthly donation setup) for. I deleted Google Maps app. For my daily usage and in my region OpenStreetMap data is good enough. It's a fork of the maps.me app which started to add a crypto wallet feature, I hope with donation organicmaps can stay (crap-ware and cost) free. - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
Not exactly sure what you mean. My understanding is Maps.me started trying to extract value from users (via the mentioned means) and that Organic Maps [0], took an old open-licensed fork of maps.me from before Maps.me went bad. I currently use organicmaps.app as a nice offline back up for my traveling. I don't know how this current drama impacts organicmaps. I didn't realize that maps.me was also a contributor to... - Source: Hacker News / 10 months ago

Instead of maps.me I suggest to use https://organicmaps.app/, the privacy-respecting fork, since maps.me was sold to a payment processor. OrganicMaps is a fork from the original founders. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago

Organic Maps has emerged as a compelling alternative within the domain of mobile mapping applications, standing alongside industry giants and a variety of open-source competitors. Positioned within the crowded field of Maps, Web Mapping, Driving Navigation, and Travel & Location services, Organic Maps offers a promising prospect for users seeking privacy-oriented, offline-capable mapping solutions.
Generally, public opinion on Organic Maps underscores its appeal as a practical and user-focused application. Users appreciate its offline functionality, which allows them to navigate without relying on constant internet connectivity. This feature is particularly beneficial for travelers, hikers, cyclists, and individuals residing in regions with expensive roaming charges or limited data access. Organic Maps' reliance on OpenStreetMap data further enriches the user experience by offering detailed maps that include places often omitted by other mapping services.
The application stands out for its minimalistic design philosophy, which is frequently highlighted in the feedback. The absence of ads, absence of forced push notifications, and lack of mandatory registration resonate well with privacy-conscious users. Additionally, Organic Maps offers night mode, turn-by-turn navigation with voice guidance, and compatibility with Android Auto, making it an appealing choice for users seeking functionality without the bloat.
Several users have praised Organic Maps' origins as a fork of Maps.me, noting the fork avoided some of the monetization strategies that made Maps.me less appealing. Organic Maps has maintained its open-source integrity and has avoided integrating unwanted features such as crypto wallets, which were introduced in Maps.meโs more recent iterations. This focus on core functionality, while remaining open-source, appears to have garnered a loyal user base.
However, some critiques mention a limitation in points of interest (POI), which could affect the user experience depending on specific regional needs. Additionally, while the application's user interface is generally considered clean, there are a few dissenting opinions where users feel it does not fully meet personal standards, indicating room for potential improvement.
Organic Mapsโ funding model, relying on donations, presents a unique challenge in maintaining long-term sustainability and development without commercial backing. Users have recognized the importance of contributions in keeping the application free of cost and advertisements.
In summary, Organic Maps is perceived positively in the software and technology community for its user-centric features and respect for privacy. While some limitations exist, particularly in POI coverage and dynamic traffic data, its robust offline capabilities and open-source foundation continue to draw favorable comparisons against competitors, rendering it a preferred choice for privacy-focused mapping solutions.
