1. What's the story behind OpusImg?

   OpusImg started from a simple observation: most of what people do to images — shrink it, change the format, crop it, rotate it — is arithmetic a browser has been able to do locally for years. Yet nearly every free tool uploads the file to a server, holds it in a queue, and hands it back. The upload is the slowest part of the job and the only part with any privacy cost.

   So the basics were built to run locally in WebAssembly, and the server was reserved for work that genuinely needs a GPU. The result is a workspace where the fast path is instant and private, and the AI path is explicit about what it sends.

   It's a sibling SaaS of OpusPDF, which takes the same approach to documents.

2. What makes OpusImg unique?

   Most image tools pick a side: fast browser-only utilities that can't do AI, or AI services that upload everything. OpusImg does both and tells you which is which before you drop a file.

   Compress, resize, convert, crop, rotate, watermark, and OCR run entirely in your browser through WebAssembly. Files never leave your device, there's no upload wait, and there's no account required. When you want an AI operation — HD background removal, 4× upscale, restore, magic eraser — that runs on GPU workers, and the page says so up front.

   The second difference is documents. Scan to searchable PDF, PDF to image, image to PDF, OCR, and scan cleanup are first-class tools, not afterthoughts. Very few image editors handle the PDF ↔ image workflow at all.

3. Why should a person choose OpusImg over its competitors?

   Against TinyPNG or Squoosh: you get the same instant local compression, plus resize, convert, crop, OCR, batch, and AI in one place instead of a single-purpose page.

   Against remove.bg: background removal is one tool among 25+, not the whole product — and it comes with upscale, restore, magic eraser, and generative fill on the same credit balance.

   Against iLoveIMG: the basics here don't upload. That means no queue, no file-size round-trip, and nothing sitting on someone's server.

   Against Photopea: OpusImg is task-first rather than a full editor. You pick the outcome you want and get it in a few clicks, with batch mode for hundreds of files at once.

   And every tool is genuinely free and unlimited on the client side — the paid plans buy AI credits, not access.

4. How would you describe the primary audience of OpusImg?

   Three groups, in roughly this order.

   People handling documents — scanning, OCR, signing, converting between PDF and image, preparing ID and passport photos. This is where OpusImg is furthest ahead of the general-purpose image tools.

   Creators and small e-commerce sellers who need clean product shots, background removal, social-platform resizes, and consistent batch output without opening a full editor.

   Privacy-conscious and technical users who don't want routine image work uploaded anywhere, and who appreciate that the tool is explicit about where each operation runs. Developers in this group use the REST API.

5. Which are the primary technologies used for building OpusImg?

   Frontend: Next.js 14, React 18, and TypeScript on Vercel, styled with Tailwind CSS.

   In-browser processing: WebAssembly codecs running in Web Workers (JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF), pdf.js for PDF rendering and assembly, Tesseract.js for OCR, and Canvas for compositing. Installable as a PWA, so the client-side tools work offline.

   Backend: Python and FastAPI on Google Cloud Run, PostgreSQL and Redis, Prisma, and Auth.js for authentication. Object storage on Cloudflare R2.

   AI inference: serverless GPU workers running BiRefNet for background removal, Real-ESRGAN for upscaling, GFPGAN and CodeFormer for face restoration, LaMa for object removal, and SDXL for generative fill.
