    It started from the other direction. We maintain a set of open-source engineering libraries - formulab for industrial formulas, plus a group of Rust/WebAssembly solvers for nesting, scheduling and statistics - all MIT licensed on GitHub.

    Libraries like that rot quietly. The formulas are correct in the test suite and wrong in the situation nobody modelled, and you never find out because nobody is using them under real conditions.

    So the calculators exist partly to be used and partly to keep the libraries honest. They are deliberately thin: the page collects inputs and renders the result, and essentially all of the actual mathematics lives upstream in the open-source packages. When someone hits a wrong number, the fix goes into the library where every other consumer gets it too, instead of being patched into one page.

    Being free and ad-free is part of that arrangement rather than a growth tactic. There is no funnel to protect, so the tools can just be tools.
