  • Why metabase and circle are not using cljs (mostly)?
But not all frontends are like that. https://nextjournal.com/ and https://pitch.com/ both use CLJS and I bet they have a huge amount of logic running on the frontend due to the nature of their apps. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Interactive Clojure tutorial
Looks great! I use sometimes Nextjournal to store and run code snippets in Clojure. But itโ€™s different. Source: over 3 years ago
  • For those who are teaching courses that deal with hands on programming online, what tools do you use to share your code and lecture notes with your students?
For this semester I would like to not use Box and use another tool to have my students have direct access to my notes without having to upload it directly to Canvas. I found two other notebooks, Deepnote and Nextjournal but not sure if they would be useful tools. I was wondering if any of you used these notebooks before or what tools have you used to share your lecture notes with students? Source: over 4 years ago

Summary of the public mentions of Nextjournal

Nextjournal: A Resilient Player in the Scientific Computing Landscape

Nextjournal is establishing itself as a versatile and robust tool for scientific computing and data science. As a cloud-based platform, it extends its utility beyond traditional Jupyter Notebooks, embracing a diverse range of programming languages such as Python, R, and Julia. This adaptability, combined with access to powerful hardware resources, including GPUs, positions Nextjournal as an attractive option for data scientists and developers who seek enhanced computational capacity and flexibility in their workflows.

Core Strengths and Differentiators

Nextjournal is frequently discussed in the context of its capacity to support complex scientific computations and data science projects. Its competitors include platforms like Schema, Noteable.io, and Deepnote, which are similarly positioned in the data science tool ecosystem. However, Nextjournal distinguishes itself with a robust cloud infrastructure that potentially offers more scalability and diverse functionalities, such as supporting multiple programming languages. In addition, the integration of Clerkโ€”an open-source tool maintained on GitHubโ€”demonstrates the platform's commitment to extending its capabilities and fostering a broader ecosystem of tools.

A notable advantage of Nextjournal is its integration of ClojureScript (CLJS) for frontend logic, which gives it an edge in terms of interactivity and user experience. This is particularly relevant for applications that rely heavily on rich browser-side logic, an aspect highlighted in discussions comparing it to other platforms like Metabase.

Public Reception

The overall sentiment towards Nextjournal is largely positive, with users appreciating its ease of use for running code snippets in languages like Clojure, indicative of its flexible and user-friendly environment. Educators, in particular, have expressed interest in Nextjournal as a potential tool for sharing code and lecture notes, though some remain uncertain about its direct applicability in academic settings amid concerns about seamless integration and student accessibility. Despite these concerns, its simple deployment setup and ability to sidestep local installations make it an appealing option for education sectors that require robust interactive notebook capabilities.

Challenges Ahead

While Nextjournal has cultivated a niche following, some potential users exhibit hesitation. This stems from uncertainties about its versatility in comparison to more established platforms, especially in educational contexts where stability and ease of distribution are paramount considerations. Moreover, as noted in discussions regarding other tools like Deepnote, educators and researchers evaluate such platforms not only on back-end robustness but also on user experience and ecosystem compatibility.

In conclusion, Nextjournal stands as a promising alternative in the landscape of scientific computing tools. Its blend of language support, cloud-based scalability, and modern frontend logic implementations situate it well against competitors, albeit with some challenges in educational sector penetration. As more users become aware of its capabilities, Nextjournal's adoption is likely to grow, further solidifying its position as a formidable tool for data science and machine learning practitioners.
