  • I just heard s many bad things about Bluehost...
If you have some OS skillz the hosting service https://nearlyfreespeech.net/ could be a great deal for you. It's raw BSD Unix and MariaDB. They charge by usage (cpu, disk, io) and very reasonable, nearly free for many sites, rates. No email service, though. Source: 5 months ago
  • Replacement Hosting Service Required
If you're fairly technical and don't often need support from your host, check out nearlyfreespeech.net. They have great shared hosting where you are billed based solely on your usage. It would be dirt cheap for everything but your "busy" site. I bet you'll still find the prices reasonable. In reading your post, I was thinking this would be a good fit for you right up until you said you aren't sure what CentOS is. Source: 11 months ago
  • How/where to set up a lightweight minimalist text-only website?
If Cloudflare Pages or GitHub Pages are not a good for you, you can look into nearlyfreespeech.net. I imagine your hosting bill would run no more than $1/month if you don't have lots of traffic to your site. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Best Hosting For Wordpress 2023 - Whats The Best??
If you're good at command-line stuff and looking for a solution that starts out very cost-effective and scales up really well, you can try https://nearlyfreespeech.net/ (That's nearly free as in beer, not nearly free as in the ability to host nasty content.). Source: over 1 year ago
  • i got my associates in web design and i have no idea what i’m doing
Some hosts, like nearlyfreespeech.net , give you super basic and "clean/empty" servers where they expect you to do EVERYTHING yourself from step 1. Skip this for now. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Where to find a free web hosting site that will allow me to use my own domain I already own?
Is nearlyfreespeech.net an option in your area? It is nearly free, and as close to free that I have come across for custom domains w/ reliability and extreme low cost. (I don't use this professionally, but have used it on a number of small side projects.). Source: over 1 year ago
  • Lichen - A Content Publishing Tool Written in GForth
I'd like to add an extra upvote for the NearlyFreeSpeech recommendation; it really is an excellent host, which I've used for many years. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Let's say I'm gonna get a domain name for my home server, what should I know before ?
If you are up for learning how to do DNS management your self (using their web tools, it isn't that hard) I really recommend nearlyfreespeech.net. They have been fantastic to me and their prices are very reasonable. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Official Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know about photography or cameras! Don't be shy! Newbies welcome!
I like nearlyfreespeech.net because it has PHP/mySQL support and I get the freedom to code my site however I want it. Also I like the pay as you go model so I only pay to the extent the site is used, instead of a flat subscription fee. It's generally cheaper for a lower traffic site. Source: over 1 year ago

I'm in favor of making it yourself so you can make it exactly how you want it. Especially if you're not happy with whatever options are out there. Right now I use nearlyfreespeech.net as my webhost because I like their pay-as-you-go model, and they support PHP and mySQL. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Where to host a small personal project with a Node.js rest API and React front end
Https://nearlyfreespeech.net will be the cheapest for this kind of thing. Source: over 1 year ago
  • React developer seeking advice trying WordPress for the first time
Want to learn? Go on a cheap and honorable web hosting service (I like https://nearlyfreespeech.net) and set up an instance. Use it. Create some posts and edit them. Use the Appearance panel to adjust CSS. For learning's sake your text can be LoremIpsum and your images can all be of kittens. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Redactle #111 Discussion Thread
Thanks for that info. I asked nearlyfreespeech.net for support to transfer funds, and they said that the FAQ statement about a manual process is outdated. You hit a brick wall if you don't know the recipient's account number. Source: over 1 year ago
  • What about pointers?
Personally use nearlyfreespeech.net, it's maybe a few cents a day. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Redactle #90 Discussion Thread
John (https://www.patreon.com/jhntrnr) is using nearlyfreespeech.net as a host, namecheap for the domain, and letsencrypt as a certificate authority. All are very low-cost/free options for getting this kind of thing online. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • A year ago, I (a beginner) got a Wordpress site using BlueHost and some paid builder plugin to build my portfolio site. Since then, I’ve learned Bluehost not the best option so as I near the end of my subscription, I was wondering if it was possible to move my site to a better host
If you have some geeky linux / freebsd chops, https://nearlyfreespeech.net is a wonderful hosting provider. They're basically pay-as-you-go rather than charging hefty monthly fees. You can use the Duplicator plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/ to capture your site and migrate it. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Didn’t see this coming…Anyone surprised?
I highly recommend nearlyfreespeech.net/ I trust them to work harder to protect your freedoms and be against censorship. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Portfolio Websites
Take a look at https://nearlyfreespeech.net/ They aren't totally free, but they are radically inexpensive. They charge for actual usage, so they're perfect for low volume sites. I ran a WordPress / Woocommerce staging site (a reasonably big one) using them for two months for less than US$5. Small sites can run for less than $1 per month. Source: almost 3 years ago
  • Official Question Thread! Ask /r/photography anything you want to know about photography or cameras! Don't be shy! Newbies welcome!
Website hosts? I like nearlyfreespeech.net for lower-traffic sites, because it's a pay-what-you-use model. Source: almost 3 years ago
  • Hosting recommendations
Bluehost is fine actually. But if you're moderately technical I would recommend https://nearlyfreespeech.net. No "plesk" or "cpanel" so you'll need to be farily technical but hands down the best value in hosting. Source: almost 3 years ago
  • Ask HN: Cheapest/ easiest way to host a static site
Seconding the https://nearlyfreespeech.net suggestion. I used to be their customer and had absolutely no complaints. I have switched to BunnyCDN [1] a while back, also very happy with it. Pricing is extremely cheap, and has the added benefit of being able to cache anything dynamic you might add in the future. [1]: https://bunny.net/. - Source: Hacker News / about 3 years ago
