I built it because every time I speced a NAS I hit the same wall: "NAS" on the box tells you nothing about whether a drive is SMR, and vendor MTBF numbers are marketing. I was tracking CMR/SMR, failure rates and prices in spreadsheets, so I turned it into a public tool.
