Mypaint is the most lightweight software ive used, but it doesnt have the same level of community support as krita, so some features may be lacking... Source: almost 4 years ago
Essentially, I've found the more time you have to spend spend learning the apps and/or using its tools, the less time you have to actually enjoy the art of creating. Try apps that cut down the friction between you and your art; Krita, MyPaint, etc. Would be my first suggestions since they're free, then maybe ArtRage, or Sketchbook Pro if money is not a concern. Mypaint (http://mypaint.org/) is simpler to use than Krita. Krita can be 'simplified' a bit by closing some of the unnecessary docked tools on the right. Source: about 4 years ago

MyPaint is an open-source digital painting application that has garnered a niche yet appreciative following among digital artists, particularly those using graphic tablets. Designed by artist Martin Renold, MyPaint offers a range of features tailored for artists aiming to express their creativity with minimal technological interference. Primarily aimed at digital painting and sketching, the application finds its strength in simplicity and efficiency, especially for users who prefer an open-source environment.
A distinguishing feature of MyPaint is its support for Wacom tablets and other drawing devices, giving users the flexibility to create art with tools they are comfortable with. The software's extensive brush library is acclaimed for offering versatility, allowing artists to achieve a variety of artistic styles. This extensive range of brushes supports the creation of impressive digital artworks, and many professional artists make use of MyPaint in their workflow.
Efficiency and Learning Curve: MyPaint's minimalistic design is appreciated for being lightweight, making it an attractive option for users preferring quick, straightforward applications. While this simplicity makes it user-friendly and accessible, some users note that it lacks certain features found in more comprehensive platforms like Krita. The learning curve is gentle, but the functionality is somewhat restricted in comparison to more feature-rich competitors.
While MyPaint enjoys a committed user base, it does not benefit from the same level of community support and feature expansion as some of its competitors, for example, Krita. This can lead to some users finding the array of functions limited or the software less conducive to more complex tasks. However, MyPaint's open-source nature allows for community contributions, albeit on a smaller scale than some of its rival software.
Thanks to its origins as a Linux application, MyPaint operates slightly differently compared to mainstream Windows and macOS digital art tools. It performs particularly well on Linux systems but is also compatible with PCs and other touchscreen devices, expanding its versatility across different platforms. The application supports common file formats used in digital painting, such as the .gpl format for custom color palettes, which adds to its utility within an artist's toolkit.
In comparison to other digital art software like Adobe Photoshop, Paint.NET, and Clip Studio Paint, MyPaint stands out as a cost-effective, lightweight alternative that offers sufficient functionality for basic to advanced digital painting tasks. It's a viable choice for artists seeking a free tool with essential features and ease of use. However, for those requiring extensive multimedia capabilities and community-driven advancements, competitors like Krita or ArtRage may offer more robust options.
Overall, MyPaint receives positive feedback for its simplicity and effectiveness in digital drawing and painting. It's particularly praised for being artist-centric, allowing creators to focus on crafting art without unnecessary distractions. However, its relatively modest feature set and smaller community support are considerations for artists deciding between MyPaint and its more comprehensive competitors. As a no-cost solution, MyPaint remains an attractive option for digital artists prioritizing straightforwardness and functionality.
