i've run into this very problem at mixpeek, where the solution was to mark the file if it's determined it needs re-processing then append it to a queue that has re-processing jobs executed by a separate lambda. I built an API that is completely free: https://mixpeek.com/ which takes your files, regardless of location (on-prem SSD/HDs, S3, Azure Blob, etc.) parses the text (using Tika, Pytorch, Tesseract, etc.), then stores it in a Lucene search index to make it immediately searchable.
