Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing MentionDrop.
  1. What makes MentionDrop unique?

MentionDrop is the only brand monitoring tool that combines full-web coverage (8B+ pages a day across Reddit, Hacker News, blogs, forums, news, review sites) with AI relevance scoring at a solo-founder price point. Most tools force you to choose: cheap keyword matching that floods your inbox with noise (Google Alerts, F5Bot), or expensive enterprise suites with AI but at $400 to $4,000 a month (Brand24, Brandwatch, Meltwater). MentionDrop sits between them at $29 to $59 a month, with a Qwen pre-filter plus a Llama and Gemini cascade that scores every mention for relevance, sentiment, and suggested action before it ever hits your inbox.

  2. Why should a person choose MentionDrop over its competitors?

    Three reasons:

    1. Signal over volume. AI relevance scoring filters out the noise that makes Google Alerts unusable and Brand24 overwhelming. You get the mentions that actually matter, not 400 emails a day.
    2. Real-time, not daily digest. Mentions arrive within minutes, so you can be the first reply in a thread where someone asks for alternatives to your competitor.
    3. Solo-founder pricing. $29 a month for 5 keywords, $59 forĀ 20. Brand24 starts at $79. Mention starts at $49 for a single keyword. Brandwatch starts at four figures.

Plus: Slack and webhook integrations out of the box, so alerts flow into the tools you already use.

  3. How would you describe the primary audience of MentionDrop?

Founders, solo marketers, and small growth or marketing teams at indie SaaS and early-stage startups. The kind of person who tried Google Alerts, got frustrated with the noise and latency, looked at Brand24 or Brandwatch, decided the price was absurd for their stage, and went back to manually searching Reddit once a week. MentionDrop is built for that person.

Common use cases: monitoring your own brand for support and PR signals, tracking competitor mentions to find buying-intent conversations, catching "alternatives to [competitor]" threads on Reddit and Hacker News within minutes.

  4. What's the story behind MentionDrop?

I built MentionDrop because I was tired of paying either nothing (and missing everything) or paying four figures for enterprise social listening tools designed for Fortune 500 brand teams. Google Alerts is broken: latency is days, coverage is patchy, and it misses Reddit and forums entirely. The enterprise tools work but are priced out of reach for indie founders and small teams.

The technical bet was that AI had gotten cheap enough to do real-time relevance scoring at solo-founder prices. A Qwen pre-filter rejects obvious noise for fractions of a cent, and a cascade of Llama and Gemini models handles the deep analysis. That stack lets us charge $29 to $59 a month and still have margin, while delivering the kind of filtered, contextualised alerts that used to require a $400-a-month subscription.

Launched in 2026. Built and run by one founder.

  5. Which are the primary technologies used for building MentionDrop?

    • Next.js 16 (App Router) on Vercel for the web app
    • Node.js worker on Railway for the real-time SSE consumer
    • Supabase (Postgres with RLS) for data
    • Clerk for authentication
    • Stripe for payments
    • Ahrefs Firehose for web-scale content streaming
    • OpenRouter for the AI model cascade (Qwen 3.5 Flash pre-filter, Llama 4 Scout, Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite)
    • Resend with React Email for alert dispatch
    • PostHog for product analytics
    • shadcn/ui and Tailwind CSS for the interface
