   Homeowners planning or running their own renovation, and small builders pricing a job. It assumes you know the trade words but not the arithmetic, so first-time DIY builders get the most out of it.

5. What's the story behind Materialcalc?

   My own renovation ran over — on cost and on time — and not because of one big mistake. Estimating a job is dozens of small calculations: quantities per trade, waste and offcuts, the tools you don't own yet, and the way one change moves the whole total. Miss any of them and you're back at the merchant on a Saturday, or standing over material you didn't need.

   So I built what I'd wanted myself: work it out once, with your own prices, and keep it. The whole job totals room by room, so you can see what it will actually cost before you commit — not after.
