There's a free clone of Mario called mari0 out there that lets you give Mario a Portal Gun and do all sorts of wacky shenanigans with it in the original Super Mario Bros levels. Highly recommend it, as well as any other Mario or Kirby game that catches your interest. Source: over 3 years ago

Mari0 could be an interesting experience - it's a Super Mario Bros clone with multiplayer that gives everyone Portal guns that work like they do in portal and if I remember right also has a level creator with 2D versions of Portal levels.
