  • Install maps.me on ios 12
I am trying to install the application maps.me to have better navigation on my iphone 6 running ios 12. I tried to use checkmate store + adowngrader without any luck. I was thinking about sideloading a older version of that app. Can anyone help me? Source: almost 3 years ago
  • Maps.me/offline map apps?
I've downloaded maps.me to try. I don't have to have offline navigation but the marking and categorization of those marks is an absolute must. However, I noticed that I can't sync across devices with this one either. I've created a login through my Apple ID but haven't paid for any of the tiers. Does this app not support syncing across devices or do I have to pay for that feature? Source: almost 3 years ago
  • Solar Storm
GPS and cell outages: Buy a Road Atlas for your State, and practice using it to plan a trip. Also download an offline map app for your phone, i.e. maps.me or Osmand. Most will let you download a certain number of maps to your phone for free. Source: about 3 years ago
  • What do you guys think about the new Sony Walkman?
I was reluctant to go the Android route with an audio player because it felt a bit pointless and just like having a smartphone, but I read that the screen is quite small, the system's performance is severely restrained and oriented towards audio processing, and you can remove practically every thing that comes with Android. I don't intend to use its other apps because I'd hate anything calling my attention when... Source: about 3 years ago

You will enjoy it! :) First of all, I recommend using the app maps.me for exploring the inner city. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Mexico is missing.
Yes. We have google maps, with the maps downloaded, as well as maps.me as backups :) Prefer waze just because of user sourced updates, but for sure we will be fine on navigating to Guatemala. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Chile Patagonia O Circuit
It's worth having an offline map like maps.me for navigation. The only major exposure risk is around the John Garner Pass as you head towards Grey Glacier, but if the situation is extreme, the rangers at Los Perros or wherever will either not let you go, or ensure you leave early to beat inclement danger. There were some spots with low data access. Download google maps off line, use maps.me, get a paper map. We used all three. Source: about 3 years ago

  • Getting robbed at gunpoint in Honduras - What's the worst experience you've had as a backpacker?
Got lost in around Thakhek, Laos following google map directions. What should have been an hour walk to the bank and bus station, ended up being almost 3 hours. During this time, I was walking in farmland, chased by dogs, got caught in a downpour and ended up walking along the highway being splashed in mud by passing vehicles. Why not turn around you say? Because google keep showing the bus stop was less than 10... Source: about 3 years ago
  • Mountains are hard, but so far Japan is going great!
Google maps is a good back-up and ideal for city searching. I would use a map app with useful features like elevation, routing, recording your route, etc like maps.me or Locus maps (very detailed but not too happy with their split on multiple apps just further complicating things) or something to use in the planning stage that gives you the street view so you can see the condition of the road/path/trail. I download maps.me and Google Maps when I travel to areas without cell signal (like hiking or foreign countries), but I don't use them as a daily driver. Source: about 3 years ago

I actually prefer maps.me for Aruba. It, too, has an offline mode. Source: over 3 years ago
  • Best way to find and navigate hiking trails around Bariloche
I did the Refugio circuit in the middle of winter fully self sufficient. If you have back country experience then the direction(s) will be easy to follow regardless of trail visibility because of obvious geographic features. Download the maps.me map or have a physical map and route it out prior. Camp wherever you like in the winter, nobody else is out there. Source: over 3 years ago

Summary of the public mentions of MAPS.ME

Public Opinion Summary of MAPS.ME

MAPS.ME, a prominent player in the mobile navigation and web mapping landscape, consistently garners positive public opinion for its robust offline functionality and practicality, particularly among travelers and outdoor enthusiasts. Leveraging the OpenStreetMap database, MAPS.ME offers a comprehensive, open-source alternative to dominant platforms like Google Maps, which has positioned it as a favored choice among several user demographics.

Key Strengths
  1. Offline Functionality: A defining attribute of MAPS.ME is its ability to provide fully offline maps, a feature frequently praised in user discussions. This allows users to download maps for use without an internet connection, making it an invaluable resource in areas with limited connectivity, such as rural locations or during international travel. The availability of downloadable maps in over 345 countries and islands underscores its global utility, which is frequently highlighted in reviews.

  2. User-Friendly Experience: The application's ease of use is another applauded factor. MAPS.MEโ€™s interface supports a range of essential navigational capabilities, including traffic information, public transport routes, and cycling navigation. These features are often likened to those found in Google Maps, with the added benefit of offline usability.

  3. Traveler Oriented: Specific acclaim comes from those embarking on travels or adventurous pursuits. The app provides detailed information about tourist attractions, dining options, and hiking trails, which have been beneficial for tourists and digital nomads exploring new terrains. User anecdotes recount successful navigation in varied landscapesโ€”be it a solo motorbike trip through Vietnam or hiking the rugged terrains of Patagonia.

  4. Crowd-Sourced Accuracy: Similar to other applications built on OpenStreetMap, users appreciate MAPS.ME for its community-driven data inputs. This feature ensures frequent updates and reliable map data, making it a trustworthy tool for plotting routes in less-documented regions.

Areas for Improvement
  1. Device Syncing: Some users have reported dissatisfaction with the app's limited multi-device syncing capabilities without a subscription. While basic functionalities are available for free, advanced features such as cross-device sync require a paid tier, which some find limiting without clear communication about capabilities.

  2. Technical Constraints: There have been isolated technical challenges noted in certain user reviews, such as attempts to install older versions for compatibility with outdated devices. These anecdotes reflect a need for clearer documentation or support for users operating on legacy systems.

  3. Update Frequency and Reliability: While the crowd-sourced model is generally praised, the reliance on community updates can lead to occasional inaccuracies in less traveled areas. Users engaging in remote or off-road activities sometimes report discrepancies, necessitating backup navigation solutions.

In conclusion, MAPS.ME emerges as a formidable alternative to Google Maps, particularly for those who prioritize offline access and are geographically adventurous. Its open-source nature and extensive global coverage make it especially appealing to travel-savvy individuals, though enhancements in cross-device synchronization could elevate its user experience further. Overall, the application's blend of practicality, accessibility, and community involvement continues to resonate positively with its user base.
