At some point all of us wanted to have a fully customized and flexible Linux configuration, not having a pre-configured system like Manjaro for example. There must be people out there, who are not a big fans of DE (Desktop Environments). I use MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid-2014) with Manjaro as OS using i3 as a window manager. It isn't perfect, but I'm thrilled with it. If you like SteamOS and want something like it on desktop, though, I'd look for something with the same base/underlying system (Arch Linux) and the same desktop environment as the Deck's desktop mode (KDE/Plasma). My favorite is Manjaro in my desktops/laptops. This'll be very much like the Deck's desktop mode without the gaming mode (though Steam's Big Picture mode is basically the same interface now). • Arch for science
I'm assuming that you know your way around Arch (reading the wiki, using pacman. etc). If you're not, you may install Manjaro orEndeavourOS (the latter uses the Arch repos directly if that's what you need). Be mindful that if you install something other than vanilla Arch, you'll need to go to their official channels (i.e. Not here) for support. Source: about 3 years ago

Summary of the public mentions of Manjaro

Manjaro Linux remains a prominent player in the Linux distribution landscape, often distinguished by its user-friendly approach and thoughtful integration of Arch Linux's robust architecture with a more accessible interface. Positioned among popular distributions like Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch Linux, Manjaro has carved out a niche for itself, particularly appealing to users who want the customizability of Arch without the intricate setup.

User-Friendliness and Accessibility

Manjaro's reputation for ease of use stems largely from its clean installation process and intuitive GUI tools. This distribution is noted for providing a smoother entry point for newcomers to the Arch ecosystem. It includes the Calamares installation tool, which facilitates a straightforward setup process, closely aligning with the user experiences of Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Such features make Manjaro a popular choice for those who seek to avoid the complex, manual configurations associated with pure Arch installations.

Rolling Release Model and Stability

Manjaro's adoption of a rolling release model ensures that users have access to the latest software updates and features without needing to undertake major system overhauls. However, unlike Arch's bleeding-edge philosophy, Manjaro emphasizes stability by rigorously testing new packages before merging them into its repository. This balance between freshness and reliability appeals to users who desire up-to-date systems without compromising system stability.

Desktop Environments and Customization

A defining characteristic of Manjaro is its flexibility in desktop environments, catering to diverse user preferences. It supports a wide array of environments, including Xfce, KDE Plasma, GNOME, and more niche choices like i3 and Awesome. This selection is further extended by community-driven editions incorporating environments such as Budgie, Cinnamon, and MATE, ensuring that users will find a setup that suits their aesthetic and functional needs.

Package Management and Software Availability

The integration of the Pacman package manager, coupled with the support for AUR (Arch User Repository), offers Manjaro users extensive access to software packages. Manjaro additionally supports Snap and Flatpak packages, broadening the software availability beyond traditional repos. This comprehensive approach makes it a preferred choice for users looking for a rich software ecosystem.

Performance and Use Cases

In discussions related to gaming and performance, Manjaro is often recommended for its latest driver support and kernel updates, crucial for gaming enthusiasts or those with demanding computational tasks. It positions itself as a compelling alternative to SteamOS, especially for desktop setups seeking a blend of everyday usability and gaming capabilities.

Community and Perception

Despite its strengths, some critiques focus on management issues within the project rather than the distro's technical aspects. Nevertheless, the community generally perceives Manjaro as a well-rounded choice for new and seasoned users alike. Stability, user-friendliness, and customizability are consistently highlighted as its core features, encapsulating a broad appeal to a diverse user base.

In summary, Manjaro stands out in the Linux world by providing a robust, dependable, and highly customizable environment, drawing on its Arch Linux roots while making it accessible to users who otherwise might be daunted by Arch's complexity. This balance makes Manjaro a consistently popular choice across various user needs and expertise levels.
