How is this different from the public annotations in https://web.hypothes.is ? - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
  • Sioyek is a PDF viewer with a focus on textbooks and research papers
Hypothesis https://web.hypothes.is/ is pretty good at keeping notes on PDF. Normally it anchors the annotations for any url but I believe that for PDF is also doing some extra checksum magic to uniquely identify the PDF and apply the annotations. Furthermore you can have collaboration features such as group annotations. Useful for classes or science labs... - Source: Hacker News / 10 months ago
  • What happened to the idea of having a comment section for each webpage?
Tools like https://web.hypothes.is exist and have a decent number of installs. The hard part of a generic third-party commenting tool is creating the right social context for it to actually be useful. Hypothesis for example is mostly used via its integration into online learning platforms, where that context already exists. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • Browser extensions are underrated: the promise of hackable software
I honestly can't imagine not using extensions. I'm 39 and have been on the web since Netscape etc in the early 90s and I honestly care more about the extensions than I do anything the browser actually does. Like, if there were no extensions I don't think I'd care at all if I used Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc. But Chrome and Firefox have this massive, massive ecosystem of productitivy improving extensions. I'll give... - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago

  • Best eReader with annotating capabilities?
I go out of my way to read .pdfs in my browser (laptop and/or mobile/tablet) so that I can use web.hypothes.is as a tool for quickly annotating, note taking, and tagging. (It also works for anything web-based.) It's reasonably easy to pull the data out (even by cut and paste) into other programs and tools like Obsidian if necessary. All of my infrastructure here is free. Hypothes.is makes a fantastic commonplace... Source: almost 2 years ago

  • How to augment Wiki for collaborative learning? Add conversations.
The editors could add the conversation hubs such as local meetups, Scratch, free4talk, Schoolhouse.world, discord, Zoom, Jitsi, Eventbrite, or Reddit on the article talk page and a central calendar or on the site annotation (hypothes.is). Linking to the existing meeting sites with facilitator present and safety measures would lower the risks. Source: over 2 years ago
