Most AI receptionists on the market are voice-only. They answer calls and stop. Jodie handles every inbound channel a small business actually uses, from one AI: calls first, plus email, WhatsApp, SMS, Facebook Messenger and LinkedIn. The same AI that picks up the phone also answers WhatsApps from new leads, replies to enquiry emails, and follows up on quotes that have gone quiet. One product, one onboarding, one knowledge base, every channel.
Two reasons. First, scope. Voice-only AI receptionists like Smith.ai, Goodcall, Rosie and Numa stop at the phone call. Jodie covers every channel a small business actually loses leads on, including WhatsApp, SMS and email. For UK service businesses especially, where most enquiries now flow through WhatsApp, this is the difference between catching every lead and missing most of them.
Second, fit. Voice-agent platforms like Vapi, Retell, Synthflow and Bland are developer infrastructure, not finished products for owners. Jodie is built for the plumber, the salon owner, the contractor: ready out of the box, no integration work, calls and messages handled the same day you sign up.
Owner-operators of small service businesses where speed of response wins or loses the job. Plumbers, electricians, HVAC contractors, locksmiths, builders, roofers, salons, hair and beauty studios, dental practices, medspas, veterinary clinics, lawyers, accountants, property agents, cleaning companies, and small agencies. Anyone who runs a business where missing a call or taking too long to reply on WhatsApp directly costs revenue, and who does not have the budget for a dedicated reception team.
Most AI receptionist tools were built for tech-forward US SMBs and stopped at the phone call. Spending time with British service businesses made it clear that model was incomplete. Plumbers, salons and contractors were not running their inbound on calls alone. WhatsApp was already the company inbox, with email and SMS close behind, but no one was solving the receptionist problem across all of those channels at once.
Jodie was started in 2025 to be the actual inbound layer for small businesses, not just a phone agent. The product launched as an AI receptionist for calls and quickly extended into WhatsApp, SMS, email, Facebook Messenger and LinkedIn. The thesis is that the right unit is not "AI for phone calls" but "AI for every channel a customer reaches the business on." Now in private beta with WhatsApp, expanding the channel mix month by month.
Jodie's real-time voice stack is built on LiveKit, ElevenLabs, and the OpenAI and Google Gemini real-time APIs. Telephony runs on Twilio. The application backend is Laravel, with React and Next.js on the web, native iOS, and a cross-platform mobile client. The messaging layer uses the official WhatsApp Business API alongside the corresponding APIs for Facebook Messenger, SMS, email and LinkedIn. Underneath every channel sits a single agent runtime that holds conversation state, intent, and end-action policies in one place, so the customer experience stays consistent whether they call, message, or email.
