IRC - Also still around and in some cases, the same as it ever was, albeit with a smaller user base. A list of networks can be found here, and while there are many actively developed IRC clients out there, if you don't know where to start, most people recommend HexChat. You can use KVirc, HexChat or like me Xchat-SE. The latter two are both freeware forks of Xchat, which used to be my long-term favorite client, albeit shareware. Nowadays, HexChat is probably the most popular choice but I prefer Xchat-SE because it almost identical to the original application yet it's regularly updated and boasts pretty much the same rich set of features. I've historically used KVIrc a lot. HexChat is also a popular one. Both will require the user to enter the server details (though you could create a patched version which doesn't) and probably also require installation (I faintly remember using a third party portable Version of KVIrc, but I'm not sure anymore).
