  • Hiring a Canadian for ad hoc, hourly work (I'm a US person, not yet a business)
Third - the 1099. If you have a consulting contract, then you don't have to pay taxes for the individual. The consulting contract will clearly state that they are responsible for all taxes, including self-employment taxes. I still use a payroll service (gusto.com in my case, but whatever floats your boat) to pay contractors, that way someone else is taking care of the 1099s and such, which can be a pain in the ass. Summary of the public mentions of Gusto

Gusto has established itself as a significant player in the field of payroll, HR, and employee management solutions, distinguishing itself primarily by focusing on payroll rather than expanding into full accounting services like some of its competitors. This specialization is endorsed across various reviews and user discussions, highlighting Gustoโ€™s proficiency in solving payroll-related issues for small to midsize businesses.

Key Features and Strengths

  1. International Payroll Capabilities: Gusto has a robust payroll feature allowing wage transfers to contractors in over 120 countries, which is particularly beneficial for businesses operating globally or employing remote professionals across different jurisdictions. This global reach ensures compliance with local labor laws, a critical selling point for international operations.

  2. User Experience and Onboarding: Praised for its exceptional user experience, Gusto's platform is designed to accommodate both tech-savvy and novice users, making the onboarding process straightforward for new employees and contractors. Its simple, user-friendly interface and comprehensive library of resources make it accessible to companies without extensive HR or technical expertise.

  3. Integration and Compliance: Gusto offers an extensive library of integrations with other software tools, making it a flexible choice for businesses already using various digital platforms. It also ensures compliance with U.S. payroll requirements, which is essential for businesses seeking a reliable payroll processing framework.

  4. Cost-Efficiency for Small Businesses: For smaller teams, Gusto is a cost-effective solution compared to giants like ADP Workforce Now and Paychex. Its pricing model allows businesses to choose between different plans based on their needs, including options for contractor-only employers without a base fee.

  5. Employee Benefits Management: Beyond payroll, Gusto also encompasses employee benefits management, facilitating a more holistic approach to HR by helping companies handle health insurance and other benefits within the same platform.

Challenges and Criticisms

  1. Limitations for Larger Enterprises: While Gusto is highly suitable for small to midsize organizations, it may not scale as effectively for larger enterprises. Some reviews suggest that its feature set might not be sufficient for more complex organizational needs.

  2. Customer Service Concerns: There have been mixed reviews concerning Gusto's customer service. Despite some users praising its support team, others have encountered less satisfactory experiences, particularly underlining the need for improved service consistency.

  3. Time-Tracking Features: Gusto's core plans have been noted to lack built-in time-tracking features, which can be a drawback for businesses requiring comprehensive time management solutions alongside payroll.

Conclusion

Overall, Gusto is a well-regarded payroll and HR service provider, celebrated for its simplicity, flexibility, and international reach. It serves as an excellent solution for small to medium-sized businesses, especially those operating remotely or internationally. Gusto may benefit from further enhancing its customer support and expanding its feature offerings to include more comprehensive time management solutions, thus appealing to a broader range of business sizes and complexities.
