  • Best place to buy new/ish XPS 15 in UK?
Found a site gumtree.com which has a number of XPS 15 systems listed for sale in the U.K., some of them like new. Of course you didn't say where in the U.K. And it's a big country. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Monthly apartments in Edinburgh?
Your only luck could be to check shared flats on gumtree.com or spareroom.com - a few years ago I got a room in a shared flat when a tenant had a secondment out of the country for 3 months. But that was just luck. Source: over 3 years ago
  • How difficult is it to find a 1 BR or studio apartment with a bathtub?
The other popular website to look at is gumtree.com, or at least used to be. Source: about 4 years ago
  • What are the prospects of finding a studio/1 bed appartment there?
Look on gumtree.com as well. I don't know about for whole apartments but for share rooms they can often be better. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Is there something like 'Gunmtree' in Malta?
Is there a website that we can buy/sell/give away our things? Similar to 'gumtree.com'? Source: over 4 years ago
  • Thoughts on this scam? (Gumtree Delivery)
Oh yea that's true. The official Gumtree website will contain the "https://gumtree.com" domain, but this one is "https://gumtree.shipping". https://help.gumtree.com/s/safety. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Looking for student friendly areas for accomodation! Please help!!
Private landlords often use agencies to manage their properties. On the whole agencies are OK, though some are better than others. Directly contacting a landlord is more difficult usually, but try gumtree.com. We have some level of legal protection in place for tenants, which is the Assured Shorthold Tenancy. If you're British and have a guarantor who owns property in the UK, they will have to sign the forms to... Source: almost 5 years ago
  • Moving to Belfast
If you're looking to share, then spareroom.com or gumtree.com will be useful. If you're looking for a property on your own, then propertynews.com or propertypal.com are good bets. Source: about 5 years ago
  • Need to make an extra ยฃ300 in the next 30 days
Non-online ways: Definitely sell anything and everything you don't use (clothes, old electronics, furniture, homeware, etc) and don't need anymore on gumtree.com or facebook market place. Neither of these sites require you to pay to list them and are very active. These have usually been the best way for me to make quick money. Source: about 5 years ago
  • Met my savings goal but feeling guilty about spending the money?
Spending a big chunk of money doesn't feel bad at all if you're getting a bargain. Take a look on gumtree.com. Source: about 5 years ago
  • Is this a scam? It looks obvious to me but just wanted to ask. So he said he will send me the pay form for him to send me the money. I clicked the link and get this. Itโ€™s quite obvious I think.
The link is gumtree.payorders.ico, the real gumtree, (also goes for every other site) will ALWAYS have gumtree.com, nothing extra in the name without an /, like gumtree.com/xyz. Source: about 5 years ago
  • Selling a baby tub online, they havenโ€™t replied since I called them out.
Looks like that URL has been taken down and just redirects to the actual gumtree.com site now. Source: over 5 years ago
  • Looking for Student Rental in Glasgow Scotland- Incoming Exchange Students
You might struggle to find a 2 bed flat for short term rent as 2 foreign students. Most flats will require that you have employment or a UK based guarantor - the not entirely legal work around is to offer 3-6 months of rent up front but even that doesn't always work. Rightmove.co.uk or gumtree.com are good places to look though. Source: over 5 years ago
  • What is the best place to sell shoes and clothing online in the UK?
I know about ebay.co.uk, Facebook marketplace and groups, vinted.co.uk and gumtree.com but the last two don't seem to be very active. Source: over 5 years ago

Summary of the public mentions of Gumtree

Gumtree, an online marketplace primarily serving the UK, has established itself as a significant player in the classifieds segment. Comparable platforms include craigslist, OLX, and Facebook Marketplace, catering to users looking to buy, sell, or exchange goods and services locally. Despite its dominance in the UK, where it is a popular go-to for locals, Gumtree faces stiff competition globally from platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace.

Features and Benefits

Gumtree's main appeal lies in its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. It enables users to create listings for free, setting prices and adding images and descriptions as needed. This accessible model facilitates transactions for various items, from everyday electronics to larger items like furniture and vehicles. The site doesn't impose fees for listing or selling, which has been highlighted as a significant advantage over platforms that do charge transaction fees.

Geographic Reach and Market Position

Although Gumtree originated in the UK, it has expanded its services to other regions, including the USA, South Africa, and Australia. Its primary user base remains British, where it is seen as a crucial tool for buying and selling locally. This specificity is a double-edged sword, presenting as a regional asset while potentially limiting its user base expansion compared to globally recognized entities like eBay.

User Perceptions and Trustworthiness

Gumtree's reputation for facilitating smooth transactions is occasionally marred by concerns over scams and fraudulent activities, a risk inherent in many classifieds sites. Users are cautioned to verify URLs, as fraudulent sites can mimic Gumtreeโ€™s domain. The platform actively provides guidance on scam prevention, advising users on securely managing transactions and interactions.

Accommodation and Property Listings

Apart from selling goods, Gumtree is frequently used for property rentals. Users commonly mention Gumtree as a viable option for finding shared accommodations, particularly in student hubs like Glasgow and Belfast. However, navigating these listings can be tricky, with legal elements such as assured shorthold tenancies and the necessity for guarantors often coming into play for renters, particularly foreign students.

Community Sentiment

Overall, Gumtree retains a favorable position among users looking for quick, cost-effective sales solutions. Itโ€™s particularly valued for its local focus, free listing model, and flexibility. However, user activity levels on the site can vary, with some discussions highlighting a perceived decline in activity for specific categories like clothing sales compared to competitors.

Gumtree also maintains a nostalgic value as a recognizable brand name that has stayed relevant amidst the emergence of newer platforms. It remains an essential resource for individuals seeking localized, straightforward, peer-to-peer interactions without the complexity or cost of larger e-commerce giants. However, the constant need for vigilance against scams underscores the importance of educated platform interactions to safeguard user trust and maintain its community-focused ethos.
