See what's inside a file before you download it.
Foretaste is a browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Right-click any file link and choose "Open with Foretaste" - it reads the file straight from the site it's already on, in your own browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, because there's no Foretaste server for a file to go to.
What it opens
105 file extensions: documents (PDF, Word, PowerPoint and their OpenDocument equivalents), spreadsheets and CSVs, archives (ZIP, 7z, RAR, tar and more), SQLite databases, Parquet datasets, images, audio, video, fonts, subtitles, calendar invites and contact cards.
How it's efficient about it
A ZIP archive keeps its index at the end of the file, so Foretaste reads just that index — typically tens of kilobytes — to list an entire multi-megabyte archive without downloading it. SQLite and Parquet files work the same way: schema and structure come from a small range read, not the whole file.
Free and Pro
Every format is free to preview, including local OCR (text extraction from images, 14 languages, no network request for English) and finding every file linked from a page. Pro adds deeper tools: row-level database browsing, Parquet statistics, comparing two files or archives line by line, and pulling structured data (every email, every URL, every value of one column or tag) out of a file as a spreadsheet.
Privacy
Every parser runs inside the extension, on your machine. A build-time check fails the release if any network call other than fetching the file you asked for appears in the code.

Anyone who gets sent a file they're not sure about before they want it on disk — students checking course material links, developers inspecting release archives and logs, researchers previewing datasets, and anyone on a work or shared computer who'd rather not download something first to find out what it is.
It reads a file from its link without downloading it first — for a ZIP archive, that means reading only the index at the end of the file (a few kilobytes) instead of the whole thing. Everything happens locally in the browser; there's no server the file passes through.
Most tools in this space either only handle one format (ZIP-only viewers) or hand the file's address to a hosted viewer like Google Docs Viewer, which sends where you are and what you're looking at to a third party. Foretaste parses everything locally and covers 105 formats in one extension.
Built with WXT and Astro. OCR runs on Tesseract compiled to WebAssembly, executing in a browser worker.
It started from a personal annoyance: going through around 100 files a day - checking release archives, course materials, reports people sent - and downloading every single one just to find out what was actually inside it. Most of them weren't what they claimed to be, or weren't needed at all, and they still ended up cluttering a downloads folder. Foretaste is the tool that should have existed already: right-click, look inside, then decide. Built first to solve that for one person doing it 100 times a day, not as a product idea that came before the problem.
