  I tested two: AnySoftKeyboard, it's stable and works even on very old devices, but it lacks modern features and the settings are really ugly and confusing (but once you look at all of them, you'll be able to make the keyboard the way you like it, is very customizable). But it doesn't have a suggestion provider API etc none of that yet (WIP) so, as it stands now it's "just" a highly customizable FOSS "keyboard" app, and nothing more. I have high hopes for it though.   Dang, this sucks. I switched to GBoard because of how frequent nintype crashing was. I have yet to find a suitable alternative. Floris Board https://github.com/florisboard/florisboard is looking promising, but still has a long way to go. • What Android Phone would you modernize and bring back?

  The only down side to this is I can't use the keyboard apps like Gboard which purposefully don't have a "pause/disable learning" toggle (to push you to their auto corrections instead, which I don't think I'll ever be able to use until the day of consumer grade BCIs) as my suggestions quickly end up riddles with typos. SwiftKey is fine though, it has an incognito mode toggle but I wish there was a permanent toggle... Source: over 1 year ago
