I'm quite happy with FlorisBoard, though initial configuration was a bit annoying. https://github.com/florisboard/florisboard. - Source: Hacker News / 12 months ago
I didn't last long with the stock keyboard before installing AnySoftKeyboard which is one of the few FOSS alternative with support for swipe typing. The experience was... OK. It felt slow and it's accuracy left a lot to be desired. I still had to be slow and pretty accurate, so it didn't really feel like much of a change from the stock experience. FlorisBoard have also introduced their own implementation but the... - Source: dev.to / over 1 year ago

The Github code repository (https://github.com/florisboard/florisboard) had an update on February 24, so the app is not abandoned. It reads like they plan a massive update for the next version, and word suggestions will be available. Source: about 2 years ago
I tested two: AnySoftKeyboard, it's stable and works even on very old devices, but it lacks modern features and the settings are really ugly and confusing (but once you look at all of them, you'll be able to make the keyboard the way you like it, is very customizable). And I also tested FlorisBoard, it's modern, beautiful, but it's a work in progress currently in early-beta stage and it has many incomplete or... Source: about 2 years ago
Probably only via AOSP mirror. It's an AOSP component so not officially available as its own component. Check out https://github.com/florisboard/florisboard for a GitHub based OSS keyboard. Source: about 2 years ago
FlorisBoard (perhaps): This one is the dark horse for me. It's layout etc can be all customized to my liking and it's FOSS. But it doesn't have a suggestion provider API etc none of that yet (WIP) so, as it stands now it's "just" a highly customizable FOSS "keyboard" app, and nothing more. I have high hopes for it though. Wonder if kboard is a viable option. Also looking at FlorisBoard, and Unistroke Keyboard (but it is likely less practical?). Source: over 2 years ago

Keep an eye on FlorisBoard. It's still in early development, but the next major version (0.4) is expected to bring word suggestion and inline autocorrect. It feels very much like Gboard, and with a few tweaks in the settings it can look very much like Gboard as well. Source: over 2 years ago
Custom keyboard on android in an application of its own. The most modern one that you can find is this https://github.com/florisboard/florisboard. FYI: This doesn't mean that you can just "copy paste it". Its under apache2 license and you need to be compliant with it. Source: over 2 years ago
Dang, this sucks. I switched to GBoard because of how frequent nintype crashing was. I have yet to find a suitable alternative. Floris Board https://github.com/florisboard/florisboard is looking promising, but still has a long way to go. They do have a feature request for dual swipe. https://github.com/florisboard/florisboard/issues/116. Source: over 2 years ago
The only down side to this is I can't use the keyboard apps like Gboard which purposefully don't have a "pause/disable learning" toggle (to push you to their auto corrections instead, which I don't think I'll ever be able to use until the day of consumer grade BCIs) as my suggestions quickly end up riddles with typos. SwiftKey is fine though, it has an incognito mode toggle but I wish there was a permanent toggle... Source: over 2 years ago
