  • Ask HN: How many of you are self employed?
Same here! I've been running my own digital products (https://flat.social and some smaller ones) and bridging the gap with consulting. For me, the flexibility lead to a fully location-independent lifestyle which allowed me to work from places where I feel at my best. Currently writing this from a tropical patio in Brazil :). - Source: Hacker News / 3 months ago
  • Google Ending Support for Jamboard Devices
I built https://flat.social that has whiteboarding functionalities (among others). Not as advanced as Miro or FigJam but useful for quick diagrams during meetings / brainstorming. - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago
  • Zoom terms now allow training AI on user content with no opt out
Does this mean that ZOOM is basically using every attendee's audio and video stream to train their models? How do they define the "Service Generated Data"? I made a video-conferencing app for virtual events (https://flat.social). No audio and video is ever recorded, packets are only forwarded to subscribed clients. Frankly, while designing the service it didn't even cross my mind to use this data for anything else... - Source: Hacker News / 9 months ago
  • Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (August 2023)
Location: UK / EU in 2023. Remote: Full-remote but more than happy to travel occasionally. My location is very flexible. Portfolio: Most recently I built https://flat.social from scratch. It's a video conferencing app where everyone can fly around and talk with others in proximity - feel free to check out the demo! • Brits 'not interested' in the metaverse - study
Not every Metaverse requires a 3-dimensional experience. I'm the author of flat.social - a platform where people can connect in 2-dimensions. Participants can still move around and talk with others in proximity but don't need any specific hardware, even a potato laptop will do. While the fully-immersive experience is definitely cool, I learned that a simple experience that's easy to join is a powerful tool to... Source: over 1 year ago

  • What are the use cases of flat.social?
Remote teams use flat.social to socialise, collaborate and throw virtual parties! Create a permanent meeting space where each guest can move around, talk with others in proximity and hide for gossip in private rooms. It’s fun, creative, unstructured and nourishes the connections between your team members. With a number of activities designed to bring your team together, flat.social can act both as a company event... Source: over 1 year ago

  • Ask HN: What's your favorite programmer niche?
Since last year I've been using Pixi.js (https://pixijs.com/) to create an app that puts video meetings into a 2d virtual space (https://flat.social). While learning how to build it, I got really (possibly a bit more than necessary) into optimising graphics performance to make sure it runs smoothly even for users who access it on potato laptops. This includes pretty much every aspect of the rendering process - how... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago

What can you do with flat.social's Slack integration? Source: over 1 year ago
  • Ask HN: So you moved off Heroku, where did you go?
    1. It was right after the first MVP was hosted on Heroku so not that much work. I had to write Dockerfiles and set up a better CI/CD. 2. I'm a dev with a bit of DevOps experience but mostly as a user. I still have to run to my DevOps friends for help occasionally :) 3. I learned tons. Most usefully setting up the entire CI/CD myself and Dockerizing my setup. 4. Cost is one of the main reasons why I moved. Digital... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago

  • I made an app for hosting the most fun online meetings and virtual events. It's called flat.social and each guest in the virtual space can fly around and speak with others around. I'd love to hear your feedback and thoughts on it!
Participants can move freely around a virtual space (a flat!) and speak with others around them, engage in team activities or use it as a real-time canvas for brainstorming. It's still mostly in a side project stage that I'm experimenting with. There are currently three main use cases that flat.social is used as: a virtual space for remote teams, distance education and a networking space for online events and... Source: about 2 years ago
