  Secure remote access can be facilitated through encrypted tunnels. VPNs, SSH, Cloudflare tunnel, SOCKS, etc. Can all be secure ways of remotely accessing network resources. What you use will vary, depending upon the type of access you require and/or prefer.   FileRun, that's the direction I am going with its development at least. File management on your own terms, it already does and it excels at it. Might not be as documents/OCR/categorising/search oriented as the mentioned ones, but it does offer basic functionality. Not open source, but free version to use.   Check out FileRun. Although as u/flaming_m0e pointed out, TrueNas is FreeBSD. So you'll need to run either an iocage jail or a Linux box as a VM within TrueNas and host an NGINX or Apache server so you can serve FileRun. Source: almost 4 years ago

Files are stored directly on disk and can be accessed from outside of Filerun (Seafile keeps files in a database). Nextcloud was a pain to setup and I read it has speed issues.
