Yeah, this is the exact reason not to do it. Plus, there are plenty of solutions out there for this exact thing, like google drive, MS onedrive, or something self-hosted like filerun. Source: over 3 years ago
Secure remote access can be facilitated through encrypted tunnels. VPNs, SSH, Cloudflare tunnel, SOCKS, etc. Can all be secure ways of remotely accessing network resources. What you use will vary, depending upon the type of access you require and/or prefer. For file management, there are multiple tools for this task - Nextcloud, Seafile, Pydio, Sandstorm, FileRun, and more available for the choosing. Source: over 3 years ago
For file storage I use Filerun Enterprise, though I might be moving to Nextcloud eventually. Source: over 3 years ago
Filerun is an example of an alternative, it offers WebDAV and is compatible with the Nextcloud apps, but it's extremely fast compared to Nextcloud. Source: over 3 years ago
FileRun, that's the direction I am going with its development at least. File management on your own terms, it already does and it excels at it. Might not be as documents/OCR/categorising/search oriented as the mentioned ones, but it does offer basic functionality. Not open source, but free version to use. Runs in Docker, exposes a Web UI, also WebDAV if you want to mount or get mobile or desktop sync. Source: over 3 years ago
In my ever-ongoing quest for refining my workflow and organization I can across FileRun. Source: almost 4 years ago
I'm currently using Docker with FileRun and Nextcloud Android for syncing and Photoview for browsing. Source: almost 4 years ago
Check out FileRun. Although as u/flaming_m0e pointed out, TrueNas is FreeBSD. So you'll need to run either an iocage jail or a Linux box as a VM within TrueNas and host an NGINX or Apache server so you can serve FileRun. Source: almost 4 years ago

I have found filerun.com today but havent tested it yet, I would gladly take any recomendations. Source: about 4 years ago
I'd suggest FileRun for this task. It's like FileBrowser, but less slick and but a bit more powerful. It has the file request feature you're looking for. Source: over 4 years ago
So, you basically want a file manager? If so, the mentioned FileRun is probably ideal. Alternatively, the mentioned digiKam. That can also be run as a docker container (or from linuxserver.io) with VNC/web interface; however, that is not great for mobile use. Other alternatives you might want to look at are:. I recently tried https://filerun.com/ and was pleasantly surprised. I was looking for at it for the photo albums and ended up not using it for that, but the file view was good, might be worth a look for your use case. Source: over 4 years ago
Try filerun.com I have been looking for a solution for my non-profit organisation over the last week and this came up on top. Files are stored directly on disk and can be accessed from outside of Filerun (Seafile keeps files in a database). Nextcloud was a pain to setup and I read it has speed issues. Other solutions like filestash, filebrowser etc did not allow various access rights for different users to... Source: over 4 years ago
