One example would be when using a site like messenger.com, the URL is automatically redirected to one specific to whomever you most recently messaged (e.g. messenger.com/t/fdslakjs). I followed one of the prompts on screen to download the standalone Messenger app. This was not the version from the App Store -- that one is too new and won't install on High Sierra.
