    The most secure Photos app

I have always been worried abou the fact that my photos were not stored on the cloud privately. Meaning anyone with the access to the server could see my photos. I am glad that I found ente. It's end to end encrypted

๐Ÿ‘ Pros:    End to end encrypted|Open-source|Feature rich
    ๐Ÿ‘Ž Cons:    Less storage

  • Immich v3.0.0 Released
You can use https://ente.com/ (it's open-source). It also makes the seemingly much better decision of storing photos in S3. - Source: Hacker News / 17 days ago

^ is what I used to import ~300gb of photos from Google Photos to Immich. Not sure how well it works for iCloud. There is also https://ente.io/ which is a private & secure photo backup app that you don't need to self-host. - Source: Hacker News / 10 months ago
  • Apple Photos App Corrupts Images
You may want to take a look at Ente for photos, too :) https://ente.io/ I am a happy self-hosting user. - Source: Hacker News / 10 months ago
  • The Future Is Not Self-Hosted
There's Immich https://immich.app/ and https://ente.io/ which are both E2E encrypted and not locked to any ecosystem (besides, e.g. Apple only has E2E encryption when you have Advanced Data Protection enabled, and even then not on shared albums). So those apps are strictly an improvement (and I use them). I also do not have Facebook/Instagram/whatever else people are using that don't care about their own or... - Source: Hacker News / 12 months ago
  • Ask HN: What's the 2025 stack for a self-hosted photo library with local AI?
It's not self-hosted, but https://ente.io/ is an independent commercial solution with E2E encrypted cloud storage and local AI. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • A intro for Ente Photos!

  • Ask HN: What project do you donate to?
โ€ฆ # The ones I support by paying for one of its services bust mostly because its FOSS app: - https://vorta.borgbase.com - http://ente.io (But sadly not for long; because I really can't stand a non-native "photos" app. I just can't! Otherwise it's a great service!). - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • Show HN: First major release of Ente Photos โ€“ v1.0
Hi HN, We started building Ente in 2020 as an end-to-end encrypted[1] alternative to Google Photos. We've come a long way since then, - deploying on-device machine learning[2] - undergoing a cryptography audit[3] - open sourcing everything[4] - replicating to 3 clouds[5] - and shipping a lot of features[6] We're trying to build a business that can outlive us, so we have a long way to go โ€“ this is only v1.0. HN has... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago

  • Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
Very disappointed with this, but I think will be finding alternatives. Family sharing especially of Reminders is a hard one - we use lists for grocery shopping and it is extremely convenient. Has anyone tried out Ente https://ente.io/ for photos? - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Show HN: Automated Sorting of group photos by user defined N people in each pic
Ente[0] has this feature (locally run on mobile/desktop). It marks recognized faces in your gallery and then you can search for any combination of faces. [0]: https://ente.io/. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Apple courier may have stolen 2 MacBooks, () Apple is not going to help
As someone who has been on and off the Degoogle train (I ran full LineageOS without Google Play at one point) and is now pretty deep in iOS territory, I'd say the main thing for me has been email. I've used https://www.fastmail.com for a great deal of years now, which is also home to my calendar as well so there's nothing much of value tied to my Google account. YouTube subscriptions would be annoying to lose but... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago

Particularly noteworthy for me (as someone doing Elixir & ML at the moment) is the 100k$ attributed to Elixir Nx: > Building a cutting-edge distributed ML framework with Elixir from Nx โ€“ Creating a scalable, distributed machine learning framework that outperforms current solutions, the Nx project leverages Elixirโ€™s unique strengths in multitasking and fault-tolerance. • Ente Auth: open-source Authy alternative for 2FA
Thank you! Apps like Auth are a great fit for Flutter, where desktop support is nice to have. We're also using Flutter for our Photos[1] app, and it has served us well so far. Wherever necessary (cryptography, ML, transcoding, ...), we use a bridge to communicate with the native layer, and Flutter becomes a presentation layer of sorts. Reg. • Ask HN: Alternatives to Google Photos
Hey, we're building Ente[1] as an end-to-end encrypted alternative to Google Photos. If it helps, Ente has been previously discussed on HN[2][3]. We support imports from Google Takeout[4], and we stitch together metadata from their sidecar files to make your library whole. We also support Family Plans[5] and have open source apps[6] for every platform. Let me know if you have any questions, would be happy to help!... - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
  • Ask HN: What is your approach for managing personal digital assets?
I religiously use Google contacts. It's the simplest way to keep people contacts up to date on Android. I archive all important documents in specific folders by subject and date. This is backed up to back blaze with restic. https://restic.net/ I use https://ente.io for pictures. I convinced my wife to use it, and she agreed to auto share her photos so I don't nag her for copies. It had simple import from Facebook... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago

I can highly recommend Ente Photos[0]. It has automatic backup, and a very good replication architecture for maximum reliability[1]. It's also super easy to use and everything is encrypted by default. [0] https://ente.io/. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
