Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing EliteBooks.
  1. Why should a person choose EliteBooks over its competitors?

Most accounting tools in this category were designed for a business that has someone whose job is the tool โ€” a bookkeeper, an office manager, a month-end routine. They were then sold to people who have none of that.

EliteBooks assumes nobody's job is to sit in it. Bank transactions arrive already categorized from your own history. A photographed receipt comes back as a drafted bill. Reports are live because the ledger is live, so there is no month-end close.

It also runs on genuine double-entry rather than a categorized list, which matters the day an accountant asks for a trial balance.

  2. What makes EliteBooks unique?

Two things, both structural rather than cosmetic.

Payments settle into the user's own Stripe account rather than ours. We never hold client money, so we cannot delay it, freeze it, or take a cut of it โ€” not as a policy, but because the funds never pass through anything we control.

And the free plan is split on cost rather than on leverage. Invoicing, quotes, expenses and a full double-entry ledger are free permanently, because they cost us nothing per user to run. The paid plan covers only what bills us monthly: bank feed connections, AI receipt scanning, and automation.

  3. How would you describe the primary audience of EliteBooks?

Freelancers, independent contractors and solo businesses in the United States and Canada โ€” typically billing between three and thirty clients directly, with no employees and no bookkeeper.

The common thread is that bookkeeping is not their job and never will be. They need books that hold up to an accountant's review without requiring an accountant's time.

  4. What's the story behind EliteBooks?

It started from watching freelancers defer bookkeeping until it became an emergency โ€” not because they were disorganized, but because every hour spent in accounting software is an hour not spent on billable work.

The design goal became twenty minutes a week and no month-end ritual: connect the bank once, photograph receipts as they happen, and let the ledger stay current on its own. The pricing followed the same logic โ€” charge for what costs money to run, give away what doesn't.

  5. Which are the primary technologies used for building EliteBooks?

Next.js and TypeScript across the stack, PostgreSQL for storage, and Docker for deployment. Stripe Connect handles card and bank payments, Plaid provides bank feeds, and Paddle handles subscription billing as merchant of record.

  6. Who are some of the biggest customers of EliteBooks?

EliteBooks launched in 2026, so there's no public customer list yet.

It's built for one-person businesses in the US and Canada โ€” freelance designers, developers, writers, photographers, tutors, consultants, and trades. If you're the person doing the work and the books, that's who it's for.
