If you're plugged in via USB you don't need to use any third party program for the controller to work but if you're using bluetooth dualsensex set to dualshock 4 emulation makes it work properly for me. Source: about 1 year ago
Xbox Controller is good but I would suggest you to go for DualSense 5. You need to install DS5 Software for non Steam games. DualSense has Better Haptic Feedback and better ergonomic design for long run gameplay. Source: over 1 year ago
