  • Linux Distros: Ubuntu and Manjaro Fall Further into Oblivion – February 2024
The broken headline (should say Linux Gaming Distros) reminded me of DistroWatch's value to the community, aside from its unusual ranking system: https://distrowatch.com/. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
  • Ventoy, Live USB multitool for you ISOs Collector
Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI files. With ventoy, you don't need to format the disk over and over, you just need to copy the image files to the USB drive and boot it You can copy many image files at a time and ventoy will give you a boot menu to select them. You can also browse ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI files in local disk and boot them. x86 Legacy BIOS,... - Source: dev.to / 4 months ago
  • I have a lot of questions about Linux as an exclusively windows user.
Distrowatch.com is a great way to learn about each distro (or at least the big ones) and get all the details about what is in them. Source: 5 months ago
  • How install Plasma KDE in new Kali 2023.4
I wonder why do people keep mentioning about Kali Linux. And I hear almost nobody talk about PCLinuxOS (distrowatch.com top 21) or about OpenMandriva or about Mageia (distrowatch.com top 17). Source: 5 months ago
  • Newbie advice 1
Go to https://distrowatch.com and learn how to use the site. Source: 5 months ago
  • Lightweight Linux Distributions for Older PCs
I agree... So if you use the GUI, the window manager has a lot to do with it (hence the other posters comment about wayland). The author also notes the size of the download/distro, which is not equal to install size. If you wanted to go really crazy, perhaps install gentoo and only put in the packages you absolutely need? I still find this site terribly useful, and parse through distros probably once a month.... - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago
  • Problem with distrowatch.com via Mullvad
For several days now I have been unable to access distrowatch.com using any Mullvad server (I haven't tested all of them, but a lot of them). Source: 7 months ago
  • Tails is a portable OS that protects against surveillance and censorship
Distrowatch is a good place to get an overview of pretty well every Linux distribution ever made, with links and a bit of background info on each. https://distrowatch.com/. - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago
  • MX Linux MX-23 “Libretto”
MX always seems to be Distrowatch's most viewed Linux distro: https://distrowatch.com/?newsid=11903 The #1 ranking is mysterious, and doesn't jibe with how MX gets almost no attention here at HN for various reasons, but it is a great distro anyways. - Source: Hacker News / 9 months ago
  • The Future of AlmaLinux
Just pick one of the top 10 on https://distrowatch.com/. - Source: Hacker News / 10 months ago
  • Help me choose a desktop linux distribution for a laptop from 2006
And while u're at it, go to distrowatch.com search page to find more distros. Find distros with support for old computers. Remember, though, search results from here should be treated just as a starting point. Lots of times the results will not be entirely accurate. Well, u can read some infos about any distro u want there; including their websites and download pages; so it's a good enough place to start your search. Source: 10 months ago
  • SteamOS
The entire Linux system here is a bespoke custom setup or 'distribution' as they're referred to and yes there are a lot of them with the most well-known flavors probably being Ubuntu, Debian, Arch and Fedora. Source: 10 months ago
  • What is the appeal of the 'start menu' in so many desktop environments?
Like DEs, there are lots of WMs available for u to play with. For example, I3WM and Qtile. Go to distrowatch.com or google the shit out of them to find more, whichever u prefer. Enjoy. ;). Source: 10 months ago
  • About this book.
Great site to checkout: https://distrowatch.com/. Source: 10 months ago
  • I need help for comparing the linux distro.
Starting point: distrowatch.com search page for a concised version of distro listing with any use case scenario u want. It is not a complete distro list by far, but u have google for the rest. Source: 11 months ago
  • Ask HN: Why did major desktop OSes settle on a macOS-like taskbar?
    > Glancing at the new Debian 12 screenshots, I realised that in the past years most major desktop OSes transitioned to a macOS-esque (middle-aligned, bottom) large icon taskbar. Why? That's a misinformed take, Gnome is not the only desktop environment available on Debian, it just happen to be listed first in the installer, it's a DE agnostic OS If you look at the most popular linux distro, the 3 most popular ones... - Source: Hacker News / 11 months ago
  • Install&forget distro for veteran Linux user?
It's ranked #1 on https://distrowatch.com/ since forever. Source: 11 months ago
  • In need of old school tech person.
Probably can find a cracked version of XP on pirate bay. But I would still run the cracked xp in a virtual sandbox on linux. Its also quite possible a new Linux distribution already Knows how to handle those files. There's only 100's for FREE to choose from on https://distrowatch.com/. Source: 11 months ago
  • [kernel upgrade] Anyone having problems with the kernel upgrade to 6.3.4-201 today?
Something that was my go-to for finding new distros is https://distrowatch.com/. Source: 11 months ago
  • Minimalism!
If you feel courageous enough, you can switch to a Linux based system instead of Windows. Linux uses less resources, so you can be sure that if you have a 10 year-old laptop, you can use it really smoothly. If you encounter issues, you can ask on the /r/linux4noobs subreddit for advice. It's very friendly and they are ready to help with anything you ask. Source: 11 months ago
  • Looking to move to Linux, should I even consider it and what advice can be offered?
Second or third on installing on something like virtual box and playing around with some distros. I like checking out distrowatch to check out what's popular and new / different distros. Source: 11 months ago
