  If he's using an online dice roller, then it must be a multiplayer one. For example https://dddice.com - where you create a room, and he can join.   If you dont like the default dice roller, have you looked at the other dice rollers that are available as extensions (see https://extensions.owlbear.rodeo/)?   Anyway; all this is to say, people will play what they enjoy for the reasons they enjoy it. I wish all new VTTs only the best, but I also heed caution that I think there are extremely strong contenders in this space already and efforts might be better spent building tools to help in other areas of TTRPG like character creation or (shameless plug) 3D digital dice.
