IMHO, there's a better answer to any thing you like about FTP. For simple stuff, TFTP seems... fine? I've never looked under the hood, but I'm pretty sure it fixes the really bizarre choices in FTP. For everything else, either SFTP or HTTP seems to be the rule. Jellyfin is nice but I could never understand how to setup when all I wanted was to watch videos from server for example. So I used copyparty[0] and used VLC and set a username and password. I recommend copyparty if you just want something quick and easy actually. KDE has phone and laptop integrated well enough for me. It's worth giving it a try but the more devices you want integrated the more of a risk it is in case it doesn't quite work right. I love the OPDS feature to serve ebooks to my families ereader devices. I've played around with many self-hosted file manager apps. My first one was Ajaxplorer which then became Pydio. I really liked Pydio but didn't stick with it because it was too slow. I briefly played with Nextcloud but didn't stick with it. Eventually I ran into FileRun and loved it, even though it wasn't completely open source. It depends. Rails is great for rapid application development. You probably don't want to decouple at that early stage.
