Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing ConvertYard.
  1. What makes ConvertYard unique?

ConvertYard processes every file locally in your browser using WebAssembly โ€” nothing is uploaded to a server, ever. Most converters send your files to the cloud and delete them later. ConvertYard never receives them in the first place. It also handles batch conversions natively: drop 1,000 files, get 1,000 outputs in a ZIP. That combination โ€” local-first + batch โ€” has no dominant player in the market.

  2. Why should a person choose ConvertYard over its competitors?

Privacy by architecture, not policy. Tools like Convertio, CloudConvert, and Smallpdf require file uploads; their privacy pages promise deletion. ConvertYard's design makes the promise unnecessary โ€” your files stay on your device. For teams converting sensitive documents, design assets, or client files in bulk, that's a meaningful difference. No account required, no file size anxiety, no per-conversion limits.

  3. How would you describe the primary audience of ConvertYard?

Professionals who convert files regularly and care where those files go: designers batch-converting assets, developers processing build artifacts, office workers handling sensitive PDFs, and power users who've hit the limits or paywalls of cloud converters. Privacy-conscious individuals who distrust cloud tools also make up a significant segment.

  4. What's the story behind ConvertYard?

ConvertYard was built on a simple frustration: every file converter either uploads your files to a stranger's server, paywalls batch processing, or both. Modern browsers can run near-native code via WebAssembly โ€” there's no technical reason to send files to the cloud. ConvertYard is the answer to "what if the converter just ran in your browser, handled 1,000 files, and cost nothing?"

  5. Which are the primary technologies used for building ConvertYard?

Next.js (App Router, static export), TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and a suite of WebAssembly libraries: libvips-wasm for images, ffmpeg.wasm for video and audio, mupdf-wasm + pdf-lib for PDFs, and @huggingface/transformers for in-browser ML (OCR, table detection). Files are zipped client-side with fflate. Hosted on Cloudflare Pages.
